The 6th UANA Panamerican Synchronized Swimming Championships commenced on August 16th and will continue until the 22nd. The Honorable Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz, welcomed the delegations of 13 Federations, including 28 clubs, with over 288 athletes at the opening ceremony held at the San Juan Natatorium last Friday.
Joining her as master of ceremonies was Dr. Jose De Jesus, President of the Puerto Rico Swimming Federation, who highlighted the presence of two former Puerto Rico Swimming Federation and UANA Presidents, and FINA Bureau members, Dr. Manuel De Jesus, and Eng. Orban Mendoza, as well as Mrs. Chantal Darque, FINA Observer, and Mrs. Sue Johnson from the United States, Chief Scorer for the competition.
Attorney, Brian Johnson, from Canada and member of the UANA Executive Committee, stated “the job of the Organizing Committee headed by Zul Garcia and her staff has been superb.” Local resident, Mrs. Rose Cody, member of FINA’S Masters Technical Committee and Chairperson of UANA’s Technical Synchronized Swimming Committee( “TSSC”) added that “ UANA is grateful to the Mayor of San Juan, for her unconditional support for the event.”
Delegations and organizers commended the work of Dr. De Jesus, who was instrumental in securing the bid for the Championship to be held in Puerto Rico, and who has exhibited great hospitality customary to Puerto Rico’s Culture.
Today the first medals were awarded in the Open Team Competition, with Canada winning the Gold Medal, with Brazil and Mexico, winning Silver and Bronze respectively. On the Senior Technical Duet event Guatemala claimed the Silver and Chile the Gold.
