Canada wins combo gold at 2013 UANA Pan American Synchronized Swimming Championships

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico- Synchro Canada’s national junior team were the champions on Monday in the team combo event at the 2013 UANA Pan American Synchronized Swimming Championships.

The Canadian team members, performing to music by Queen,  were Anne-Marie Chouinard of Montreal, Clare McGovern of Toronto, Erica Slavin Olivia Zawadiuk and Kali Wong, all of Calgary, Wenjing Deng of Whitby, Ont., Elizabeth Savard of Laval, Que., Myriam Sabourin of Montreal, and Roxanne Morneau-Carrier and Virginie Lévesque, both of Quebec City.

Brazil was second and Mexico third.

“We had an excellent performance,” said Savard, the combo team captain.  “Our energy level was strong and our highlights really stood out.  We gave a great show.”

In the junior duet preliminaries, Chouinard and McGovern are in first place.

“We made a huge improvement today,” said McGovern, who joined forces with Chouinard six weeks ago.  “We cleaned up a lot of details and we know if we can repeat that performance in the final we have a strong chance of winning the gold.”

In the 13-15 age group, Andrée-Anne Côté of St-Georges, Que., and Audrey Joly of St-Eustache, Que., are third after the duet prelims behind the U.S., and Brazil.

‘’It went well,’’ said Côté.  ‘’Our synchronization has improved and we are closer together when we execute our movements.’’

In the 12 and under age group, Rachel Black and Eva Blainey from Granite Synchro are fourth after the duet prelims. Rosalie Dufour and Isabelle Nolin from the Quebec’s Provincial Team are fifth.

Competition continues Tuesday with the solo finals and team finals.
