Canada’s Sydney Pickrem wins bronze at world juniors
DUBAI, UAE- Sydney Pickrem won Canada’s second medal at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships on Thursday placing third in the women’s 200-metre individual medley.
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania earned the gold medal clocking a meet record two minutes and 12.32 seconds, Ella Eastin of the U.S. was second in 2:13.76 and Pickrem followed in 2:14.36, her first career sub 2:15 time.
‘’I’ve been trying to go under 2:15 for over a year now so it’s great to achieve that here,’’ said Pickrem, 16, who lives in Oldsmar, Florida . Her parents are originally from Halifax. ‘’I wasn’t pleased with my first couple of races here and that really fired me up for today.’’
Canada was fourth in the men’s 4X200-m freestyle relay with Teddy Kalp of Concord, Ont., Jonathan Brown of Calgary, Stefan Milosevic of Vancouver and Tristan Cote of Mississauga, Ont. Britain upset Australia and the U.S. for gold.
‘’It was great for us to beat out a strong Russian team for fourth place,’’ said Canada’s national junior team coach Ken McKinnon. ‘’It was really a satisfying performance for our guys.’’
In the women’s 50-m butterfly, Frédérique Cigna of Montreal took fifth spot in 27.19 seconds. The event was won by Svetlana Chimrova of Russia in a meet record 26.32.
‘’It’s my second best ever time so I’m pleased overall,’’ said Cigna, 15. ‘’I went in trying to not put too much pressure on myself and not worry about the result.’’
Alexandra Aitchison, a Canadian living in Clearwater, Florida, was seventh in the women’s 400-m freestyle.
Canada now has two bronze after four days of races. On Monday Emily Overholt of West Vancouver was third in the 400-m IM. In the women’s points standings Canada is third while the men are seventh.
Canada has fielded a 28-member team for these championships held every two years.
Competition continues until Sunday.
