Canada fourth in team standings at FINA World Juniors

DUBAI, UAE – Canada placed fourth in the overall and women’s team standings at the 91-country FINA World Junior Swimming Championships which concluded on Saturday.

In the combined team scores, the U.S. topped the standings with 989 points followed by Australia at 770 and Russia at 740.5. Canada followed at 471.5. In the women’s standings, it was the same top-four finish while for the men the U.S., Russia and Australia were 1-2-3 and Canada seventh.

‘’We are proud of our team’s performance,’’ said Ken McKinnon, head coach of the national junior team. ‘’It was a young squad and they were in tough against such a strong and large field.  Still our athletes and their coaches were able to improve our results in 57 percent of swims compared to 2011.  Many on the team are eligible for the next world juniors in two years so the future looks very bright.’’

Canada ended the six-day competition with two bronze medals earned by Emily Overton of West Vancouver in the 400-m individual medley on Monday and Sydney Pickrem of Halifax in the 200-m IM on Thursday.

On Saturday, Kennedy Goss of Toronto was sixth in the women’s 200-m freestyle while Canada was seventh and eighth in the men’s and women’s 4X100-m relays. Swimming for the men were Yuri Kisil of Calgary, Antoine Bujold of Montreal, Evan White of Oakville, Ont., and Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney of Oakville.  For the women were Pickrem, Olivia Paskulin of Montreal, Frédérique Cigna of Montreal and Goss.

‘’I thought I could have done better but I’m happy to see the improvement in my time,’’ said Goss, who raced 14 times this week.  ‘’It was a tough meet and there was some fatigue there.  But it was a great experience for us.’’

Canada fielded a 28-member team for these championships held every two years.
