COACH JASON REPRESENTING USA OPEN WATER

COACH ROBERTS REPRESENTING USA...ONCE AGAIN
At the end of September, Coach Jason Roberts will be heading to Shantou, China and Hong Kong as a member of the USA Swimming Coaching Staff. He will be coaching former Clipper standout, Emily Brunemann at the 2013 10k FINA World Cup Open Water Championships. This is a great honor and opportunity for Jason and the Clippers. “The experience and knowledge of Open Water Swimming at the World Scene will be tremendous. “ Coach Roberts explains. “Getting to work with Emily at this level makes it even better.”
Jason and Emily have remained close over the years after high-school when she left for Michigan. “I was young in my coaching career and didn’t get the opportunity to work with Emily when she was swimming with Clippers as an age group swimmer. Over the years I coached Emily when she would come into town to visit her family.” During these visits Emily has gained a great deal of respect for Jason and the Clippers program, where she started this journey in swimming many years ago. She had the opportunity to personally ask Jason to do this trip.
While on this trip Emily will swim two 10k races (one in Shantou, China and one in Hong Kong). These events will only be six days apart making it a very difficult challenge. She is currently ranked 1st in the FINA World Cup Series by 20 points. These are the last two stops of the series. With strong finishes in these races Emily will become the 1st USA Swimmer to ever win this Open Water World Cup Series.
This is a unique situation as that each athlete must have a coach. USA is sending 3 swimmers and 3 coaches. Coach Jason won’t just be standing on the side of the water during these races. He is responsible for the feeding station for Emily. Similar to the NASCAR pit stops, Emily will swim by and grab a drink of water and feeding gels from an extended pole over the water.
We are looking forward to Jason bringing back some valuable experience and knowledge to add to Clippers’ commitment to open water swimming. Since USA Swimming tapped him for this position, they will be paying for his travel expenses.
Congratulations to Jason
on this accomplishment!
