Unofficially? Hoosiers Hold Eight New World Records

VIDEO: Head Coach Ray Looze recaps the day:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University men’s and women’s swimming teams unofficially set eight new Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) world records Thursday afternoon at the IU Relay Rally at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.

Records were set in the 4x100 mixed medley and 4x100 mixed freestyle relays in long course meters and 4x50 mixed freestyle, 4x50 mixed medley, 4x50 women’s free, 4x50 women’s medley, 4x50 men’s free and 4x50 men’s medley relays in short course meters.

All marks are unofficial until certified by FINA.

“We had a lot of fun today and hopefully set a lot of new world records,” said head coach Ray Looze. “We came up with the idea about eight weeks ago and it was nice to have it come together. We had a lot of help from various constituencies and I am thankful we had so many people from the IU community behind us.”

There were two meets contested today. Competing in the long-course meet was the varsity Hoosiers, Indiana University Swim Team (program alumni), Bloomington Swim Club and Club Mart Swimming. Joining those teams for the short course meters meet was the Counsilman Center Indiana Swim Team (CCIST).

In the first new world record event, Lindsay Vrooman, Kait Flederbach, Steve Schmuhl and Jackson Miller combined in the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay for an unofficial world record time of 3:45.38. The second event eligible for world record recognition at the long course meters distance was the 4x100 mixed medley relay. Allie Day, Mike Hurley, Tanner Kurz and Haley Lips unofficially set that mark in a time of 4:13.47.

There were six new world record swims at the short course meters distance, and James Wells, Cody Miller, Gia Dalesandro and Olivia Barker set a new record in the 4x50 mixed medley relay in 1:49.87. In the women’s 4x50 medley relay, Grace Padget, Heather Hayes, Bailey Pressey and Claudia DiCapua set a new mark in a time of 2:04.34.

IU’s Curtis Goss, Blaine Nichols, Kyle Johnson and Tanner Kurz set the men’s 4x50 medley relay record in 1:50.07.

In the 4x50 mixed freestyle relay, Pressey, Stephanie Armstrong, Kurz and Cody Miller set the new record in 1:41.16. The women’s 4x50 freestyle relay record went to IU’s Stephanie Marchuk, DiCapua, Audrey Scott and Padget with a time of 1:54.97.

Cody Miller, Wells, Gerth and Philip Butler posted a record setting swim in the men’s 4x50 freestyle relay at 1:36.81.

But world record swims are nothing new to Indiana University swimming.

The list of former Hoosier world record holders is a distinguished one. Entering the 1970 season, Mark Spitz held world records in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly and was a member of two relay world record marks. Gary Hall was the world record holder in the 200 and 400-meter individual medley. In 1971, Spitz held word records in the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly, with Hall’s records coming in the 200 fly, 400 IM and 800 free relay. John Kinsella was added to the Hoosier world record list that year in the 1,500 free and 800 free relay.

Putting together this event was no easy feat. In order to make this event official, a lot of planning and working in conjunction with FINA and USA Swimming had to take place. Indiana University had the land surveying and civil engineering firm of Bledsoe Riggert & Guerrettaz, Inc. on site to measure the pool before and after the races. The U.S Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) was present to conduct post-event drug testing and all suits worn by the swimmers had to be 2013 FINA approved swimwear.
