Christmas Cracker Meet Report

From December 6-8th the Hollyburn Hurricanes had 27 team members compete at the Christmas Cracker Invitational in Victoria.

The team included April Barnes, Morgan Bender, Quincy Bender, Jason Chow, Jade Clement, Sidney Clement, Thomas Dignum, Colby Evans, Hayley Ford, Abbey Heard, John Hollands, Carly Kagna, Naomi Kagna, Shona Kelly, Laura Lesson, James Maycher, Angus Robertson, Grace Robertson, Maddie Robertson, Gabe Ross-Wilson, Chris Ruus, Marisa Ruus, Kianna Shahbazi, Kourosh Shahbazi, Aidan Smith, Antonio Sutherland and Eduardo Sutherland.

Congratulations to Naomi Kagna, Laura Leeson, Kianna Shahbazi, Antonio Sutherland and Eduardo Sutherland who all attended their first larger invitational swim meet.

The most outstanding swimmer of the meet was Chris Ruus who dedicated himself to this training cycle, missing only 1 practice and his hard work paid off. Chris broke 5 club records, making huge jumps in events such as the 200 free and 200 back and now is in the top 20 in Canada for 14 year old boys for several events.

The following swimmers achieved new Provincial Qualifying Times:

A – Jade Clement, Thomas Dignum, Shona Kelly, Grace Robertson, Gabe Ross-Wilson and Abbey Heard

AA – James Maycher

AAA – Koroush Shahbazi

Jason Chow also made his Age Group National Time in the 100 breaststroke.

The following swimmers broke club records:

10 and under girls – Morgan Bender – 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle

14 and under boys - Chris Ruus - 50 back, 100 back, 200 back 50 free and 200 free

15 and over boys

  • Jason Chow - 100 and 200 breast
  • Colby Evans – 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM

There were positive shifts in the swimmers’ racing skills, Hollyburn swimmers continued to look more and more difficult to beat going after races without fear on the front end. Improved starts, push-offs and streamlines gave many swimmers an advantage.
