Over the weekend of February 7th-9th, the Manta Rays traveled to the famous IUPUI Natatorium to compete in the Jaguar Aquatics Invitational. It was a phenomenal meet all around for our swimmers; 324 best times were established, and the Manta Rays brought home the team title! Wow!
We had two high point champions as well. Allison Bloebaum was the 13-14 girls high point champion, thanks to her win in the 500 freestyle and 10th place finish in the 100 backstroke. Olivia Potter claimed the 10 & under high point award with four individual wins, 200 IM, 200 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle, plus her second place finish in the 100 butterfly and fifth place in the 50 breaststroke.
Other winners over the weekend included Carl Bloebaum (B9-10 500 freestyle), Stephanie Schoenlein (G13-14 1650 freestyle), Meredith Wolf (G12-13 100 backstroke) and Alex Zhang (B9-10 50 backstroke). Plus we had top three individual finishes from Carl Bloebaum (B9-10 200 freestyle & 100 backstroke), Nick Bradbury (B8&U 200 IM), Peter Bradbury (B11-12 1650 freestyle), Kierstyn Cassidy (G13-14 500 freestyle & 400 IM), Roman Groenewold (B13-14 1650 freestyle), Luke Volpenhein (B11-12 100 freestyle & 50 backstroke), Meredith Wolf (G11-12 1650 freestyle), Alex Zhang (B9-10 50 butterfly) and Emily Zhao (G8&U 50 backstroke & 100 freestyle).
Two relays over the weekend claimed wins. The boys 11-12 200 freestyle relay of Karson Walker, Scott Shepherd, Ian Van Gorp and Lucas Volpenhein hit the wall first. The team of Alex Zhang, Sahan Kansakar, Carl Bloebaum and Ryan Huneck won the boys 9-10 200 medley relay.
We now have 24 athletes who have achieved the Junior Olympic (JO) time standard, before the last qualifying opportunity being at the Regional Championships this weekend at Mason. Great weekend of swimming Manta Rays, and good luck this weekend!
