DCST Boys Crowned YMCA State Champions; DCST Finishes 2nd in Combined and 3rd in the Girls Divisions

The Kishwaukee YMCA / DeKalb County Swim Team (DCST) boys were crowned the 2014 Illinois YMCA State Championships by finishing ahead of second place Springfield by 19.5 points.  This was DCST’s 4th Boys State Title with the others coming in 2002, 2003 and 2011.  DCST’s girls finished 3rd behind Springfield and Leaning Tower (Niles, IL), while DCST was 2nd in the combined scoring trailing Springfield.

For the weekend, DCST won 22 events, set 20 team records, set 13 state records, won 2 age group titles and set 1 national record.  Out of DCST’s 360 swims, 147 were lifetime best times for an improve rate of 41%.

Boys State Meet Highlights

DCST’s 12 and Younger Boys won their age division easily by 83 points over second place Springfield.  The medley relay team of Paul Ruetten, David Ruetten, Nolan Fergus and Noah Dean won this event with a new state record which was an eye popping 4.8 seconds under the previous record.  In his individual events, Nolan Fergus set two more state records in winning the 50 and 100 yard butterfly events.  All three of these swims were new team records.  For the weekend, Nolan set a total of 6 team records.  His other three team records were in 50 yard Freestyle (3rd Place), 100 yard Freestyle (3rd Place) and 100 yard Backstroke (3rd Place).  Although he didn’t set a team record in the 50 yard Backstroke, Nolan did have an excellent 2nd place finish to round out his highly successful weekend.  Note – It was announced at the meet that Nolan had set a National Record in the 100 yard Butterfly.  This was inaccurate as he is currently 13 according to YMCA National rules.  He is still considered 12 years old according to YMCA Illinois rules.  However, earlier in the year, when he was 12, he was also under the National Record.  Therefore, his previous time has been submitted to YMCA National, and it believed to be recognized as a National Record at the completion of the short course season.  Noah Dean had an outstanding weekend by placing in the top 8 in all 7 of his events.  In addition to the relay, Dean was 4th in the 50 yard Breaststroke, 5th in the 50 yard Butterfly, 6th in the 100 yard Breaststroke, 6th in the 100 yard Backstroke, 7th in the 100 yard Freestyle and 8th in the 50 yard Freestyle.  His time in the 50 yard Breaststroke was a new team record.  DCST’s 8th team record in the 12 and Younger Age Group was set by Paul Ruetten in the 100 yard Breaststroke which earned him 4th place honors.  Paul also took home a 5th in the 50 yard Backstroke, 6th in the 50 yard Breaststroke, and a 4th in the 200 yard IM.  DCST’s other top 8 individual finishers in this age group included:   David Ruetten (3rd – 200 yard IM; 5th – 50 yard Breaststroke; 8th – 50 yard Butterfly) and Quinn Cynor (6th – 100 yard Butterfly; 8th – 200 yard IM).  In the other relay event, the Ruetten brothers and Cynor teamed up with Donny Gramer to garner 5th place honors in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay.

DCST’s other age group scoring title came via the 21 and Younger Boys.  The 648 points DCST scored in this age group were a whopping 158.5 points ahead of Springfield’s 489.5 points.  Daniel Hein, Ryan Schultz, Dylan Powers and Holden Mackey took home 1st place in the 400 yard Medley Relay in state record time.  These same four guys were 2nd in the 200 yard Medley Relay.  In the 200 and 400 yard Freestyle relays, Mackey joined Jake Bjork, Michael Carlson and Jack Fergus for two 3rd place finishes.  In the individual events, Daniel Hein won 5 of his 6 events.  He was first in the 100 yard Backstroke, 200 yard Backstroke, 100 yard Butterfly, 200 yard Butterfly and 200 yard IM, and he was 4th the 50 yard Freestyle.  Daniel’s times in the 200 yard Butterfly, 100 yard Backstroke and 200 yard Backstroke were new state records.  His lead off split in the 50 yard Backstroke in the 200 yard Medley Relay was a new team record.  Jack Fergus set a team record in the 200 yard Freestyle while winning the event.  Jack’s impressive weekend continued with top 3 finishes in all 6 of his individual events (2nd in the 200 yard Backstroke; 2nd in the 100 yard Butterfly; 2nd in the 200 yard Butterfly; 3rd in the 100 yard Freestyle; 3rd in the 100 yard Backstroke).  Ryan Schultz set the state record in the 200 yard Breaststroke final.  Additionally, he was 2nd in the 100 yard Breaststroke, 2nd in the 400 yard IM, 3rd in the 200 yard IM, 5th in the 200 yard Backstroke and 7th in the 100 yard Backstroke.  Other top 8 finishers in this age group included:  Dylan Powers (3rd – 200 yard Butterfly, 4th – 100 yard Butterfly, 6th – 200 yard Freestyle; 6th – 100 yard Backstroke, 7th – 100 yard Freestyle), Jacob Bjork (2nd – 200 yard Breaststroke, 4th – 500 yard Freestyle, 5th – 200 yard Freestyle, 6th – 100 yard Breaststroke), Michael Carlson (7th – 200 yard IM) and Tyler Schultz (8th – 500 yard Freestyle).
