Wednesday, June 25, 2014
Change of Location Notice
The Open Water Championship has been moved to Houston Woods State Park at Acton Lake, which is located just north of Oxford Ohio and Miami University. The address is 6301 Park Office Road, College Corner, OH 45003 (click for Mapquest & directions). Follow signs to the Beach, and we will have many Vein Solutions Open Water Signs to help guide you.
We will follow the original schedule as posted on OhioOpenWater.com (click), but the start times will follow the arrival of athletes (may postpone the start a little). A map of the lake can be found here (click).
Why we moved the meet
On Monday, June 23, 2014, the Ohio EPA issued an advisory of a Hazardous Algae Bloom (HAB) based upon a water sample taken on June 18 at the East Fork Lake Public Beach (8.7), and can be viewed on the Ohio EPA website (click). At a reading of 6, an advisory is issued for “individuals who are elderly or very young and people with compromised immune systems that swimming or wading is not recommended.” This is based on a water sample collected on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, and the Ohio EPA chose not to re-test the water today.
The safety of our athletes is our only concern. With a HAB water sample at 8.7, we have decided not to swim this event at East Fork Lake State Park.
