Ella Hidalgo wins Gold at Far Westerns

Eleven Islander swimmers qualified to swim at the Speedo Long Course Far Western Championships, held in Concord July 30-August 3, 2014.  The Far Western Championships attracts swimmers from all over the United States, as well as from Canada and Mexico.  The Ten Islanders who qualified to swim were:

9-10  Girls:  Ella Hidalgo and Sophie Klube

9-10 Boys:  Owen Cuenca

11-12 Girls:  Ashley Hendrawan

11-12 Boys: Ian Ordinario

13-14 Boys:  Arron Clavin

15-16 Girls: Catherine Boles, Maddy Delore, Laura Fornshell, and Alexa Lum

17-18 Girls:  Rebecca Krause


10 year old Ella Hidalgo (pictured above) had an amazing meet, qualifying to swim in (6) finals out of her (8) events, with the most exciting being her 50 Back - Ella finished in 1st Place in a very fast 34.92, which is not only a new Islander Record (Ella set FOUR NEW ISLANDER RECORDS during the meet), but is also a time that ranks Ella as #1 in all of Pacific Swimming in that event!  Ella's other Top 8 finishes:

50 Free, 31.74 (5th)

100 Free, 1:10.21 (5th)

100 Back, 1:18.71 (5th, and a NEW ISLANDER RECORD)

50 Fly, 33.89 (4th, and a NEW ISLANDER RECORD)

200 IM, 2:46.74 (3rd, and a NEW ISLANDER RECORD)


10 year old Sophie Klube represented the other half of the Islanders' 10-under Dynamic Duo on the girls' side, qualifying to swim in (2) finals, and setting two NEW ISLANDER RECORDS in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke events.  Sophie's two finals were in the following events:

100 Back, 1:21.52 (9th)

100 Breaststroke, 1:30.85 (7th and  NEW ISLANDER RECORD)


9 year old Owen Cuenca only recently aged up to the 9-10 age group, and already qualified to swim at Far Westerns in 100 Breaststroke.  Owen finished in 1:42.29.


12 year old Ashley Hendrawan improved her time in all three of her races, the 100 Fly and 400 IM, and Ashley won a medal for placing 8th in 200 Fly in a time of 2:38.59.  Ashley broke her own ISLANDER RECORD in the 200 Fly, which is becoming her signature event.


12 year old Ian Ordinario capped off what has been another incredible swim season for him, during which he achieved many new Junior Olympic and Far Western Qualifying times.  Ian showed his versatility, competing in (6) events:  50 and 200 Free, 50, 100, and 200 Breaststroke, and 200 IM.


14 year old Arron Clavin, dropped time in (7) out of the (9) events he swam, setting a NEW ISLANDER RECORD of 5:04.01 in 400 IM.  Arron also competed in 50, 100, 200 and 400 Free, 100 and 200 Breaststroke, 100 Fly, and 200 IM.


15 year old Catherine Boles qualified to swim in (4) finals, and set NEW ISLANDER RECORDS in three of those events:

100 Free, 59.43, (4th and a NEW ISLANDER RECORD)

800 Free, 9:19.15 (2nd and a NEW ISLANDER RECORD)

200 Back, 2:23.75 (5th)

400 IM, 5:18.40 (8th, NEW ISLANDER RECORD of 5:12.68 was set in prelims)


15 year old Maddy Delore qualified to swim in 50 Free, 100 and 200 Breastroke, and 100 and 200 Fly.  Maddy swam a quick 28.19 in 50 Free, which is a new SPEEDO SECTIONAL QUALIFYING TIME.


15 year old Laura Fornshell qualified to swim in (3) final events in:

200 Free, 2:09.80 (6th)

400 Free, 4:31.72 (6th)

800 Free, 9:23.09 (4th)


18 year old Rebecca Krause capped off her long Islander swimming career by swimming to (3) personal best times out of (4) events, and winning a medal placing 7th in her signature event, the 200 Fly, in a time of 2:30.24.  Rebecca will be sorely missed as she will soon move to begin her college career at Tulane University, where we have no doubt that Rebecca will continue to shine academically.  Best of luck, Rebecca!  We will all miss you!
