Lima's logo for the 2019 Pan American Games in inspired by the Amancaes flower ýLima 2019The logo for the 2019 Pan American Games, inspired by a symbol of the host city Lima, has been unveiled.

It features the flower Amancaes, commonly associated with the Peruvian capital, which sprouts in July and August.

The three colours springing from the yellow of the flower - green, blue and purple - represent "three athletes in competition and...the three Americas", organisers have said.

The new logo was presented at the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima five years ahead of the start of the Games by a team that included José Quiñones González, the President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee and head of the Organising Committee of the Games, and Francisco Boza Dibos, President of the Peruvian Institute of sport.

It was designed by artists Juan Diego Sanz and Jorge Luis Zárate, who came out on top in a national competition to find a logo for the Games.

Mayor Susana Villarán said: "From today [there] are five years until the Pan American Games.

"The event will be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of our city to receive an entire continent.

"All are working to make the Games leave a tangible legacy for Lima."

It was confirmed that 40 sports will be contested during the Games, with 7,000 athletes set to compete.

Lima was awarded the 2019 Pan American and Parapan Games in October last year.

It comfortably beat bids from Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela, Santiago in Chile and La Punta in Argentina.

The city will be the 18th edition of the Games and it is due to be held from July 26 to August 11.

Toronto in Canada will host the 2015 Pan American and Parapan Games from July 10 to 26.
