Campus visits: Taylor strong out of the gate
By Nick Gerts
Kate Taylor has jumped out to a successful start in her first
year with the University of Chicago women's swimming team.
The former DeKalb swimmer helped lead Chicago to a six-team Maroon Invitational championship this past weekend after placing in seven events.
Taylor opened the event with a second-place showing in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:15.99. Then, as the fourth swimmer in the 400-yard medley relay, she helped secure another second-place finish before coming back with another second-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
And after a brief break, Taylor returned to individual events and captured fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.95 seconds. Four events later, Taylor helped Chicago's 800-yard freestyle relay team to a first-place title in a time of 8:13.48. She then captured second in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:59.77) before capping her successful day with another second-place showing with the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Gordon helps Xavier: Freshman swimmer David Gordon placed in three events to help guide the Xavier men's swimming team to a third-place finish at the IUPUI's House of Champions Invitational on Saturday.
Gordon, who graduated from Sycamore but competed with the DeKalb swim team, opened the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:48.39. He then placed ninth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.94 before closing his day with a third-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:40.92).
In a dual meet against Western Kentucky on Nov. 7, Gordon finished with a trio of third-place finishes in Xavier's 166-110 loss.
His first third-place finish came in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:59.10) before notching his second and last individual finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.93). He then helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a third-place finish in 1:31.25. He was a part of the 'D' squad, as all four Xavier relay teams placed in the top four in the event.
Belrichard honored by CCIW: Former Sycamore standout Brittany Belrichard was named to the 2009 All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Second Team. The junior, who plays for the Millikin women's soccer team, scored seven goals and had two assists on the season.
