Mel Zajac International Recap

Mel Zajac International Meet Recap

Three Hurricanes swimmers raced at the Mel Zajac International Swim Meet at UBC this past weekend. It is one of the fastest senior meets in Canada with swimmers needing Western National Time Standards to compete at the meet. It was very exciting to have three swimmers there and we will have more attending in the next couple of seasons as our young swimmers continue to move up! The swimmers had the opportunity to race against members of the Canadian Olympic team and there was a ceremony honouring the Olympic athletes from the Vancouver National Training Centre.

Chris had a strong meet as he continues to work on his racing skills heading towards the summer. Chris was the one veteran at the meet and raced well just over his personal bests. The highlight was Chris reaching the medal podium in the 50m Backstroke, Chris finished third overall and first place was the Canadian record holder!

Avery qualified for Canadian Age Group Championships this summer with her time of 36.99 in the 50m Breaststroke! She now has three qualifying times and can compete at Canadian Age Groups for the first time! Avery reached finals in the 200m Breaststroke and set new bests in her non-breaststroke events including a club record in the 200m Individual Medley!

Sophie just missed her third qualifying time for Canadian Age Groups but had a great meet with big drops in her non-breaststroke events! Sophie also had an amazing swim in the 200m Breaststroke finals finishing with a time of 2:47.34!

Our next big focus meets will be LMR Championships, AA Championships and AAA Championships in June and July. We now have eight swimmers qualified for AAA Championships (Durban, Morgan, Sidney, Roscoe, Avery, Chris, Aidan and Sophie) and seven qualified for AA Championships (Quincy, Jade, Thomas, Abbey, Lucas, Marisa, and Kourosh) with more aiming to qualify at LMR Championships this weekend!
