SVY Athletes in Action at 2016 US Olympic Trials!

For the second consecutive Olympic quadrennial, the Somerset Valley YMCA swim team will be represented in the fastest swim meet in the world at the 2016 US Olympic Trials.

SVY Senior Collegiate athlete Zack Warner will be competing in the 100m and 200m breaststroke in Omaha, Nebraska this week.  Warner first qualified for US Olympic Trials with SVY at 2014 LC YMCA Nationals.  He graduated from SVY’s 18/Under program in 2014, and returned from college in January to train and prepare for Trials under the SVY flag.

“I am very proud to represent SVY,” said Warner.  “I appreciate the support and everything that everyone has done for me over the past six months.  The credit goes to you all.”

Warner is seeded 16th in the 100m breaststroke, an event in which he hopes to have a very strong showing.  He is also seeded 62nd in the 200m breaststroke.

“The goal is not just to swim but to place as high as possible,” said Eric Horowitz, Head Senior Collegiate Coach at SVY.  “We are looking forward to the opportunity for Zack to compete with some of the fastest breaststrokers in the world, and expect it to bring out his best.”

Warner is a 12-time YMCA National Champion who holds multiple YMCA National meet records, NJ Swimming LSC records, and SVY team records.  He is an NCAA DI qualifier who is competing for the N.C. State Wolfpack this fall.

“Zack is one of the most accomplished SVY athletes in the history of the program,” said Dan Roth, Director of Competitive Aquatics and Head Swim Coach at SVY.  “He exemplifies everything our program is about.  He believes in perfecting the process, he trusts the coaching staff, and he truly cares about making the program better.  He embraces the role of mentor for our younger athletes and we couldn’t be luckier to have such a tremendous individual represent us at this level.”

Warner isn’t the only SVY athlete at the 2016 US Olympic Trials.  He joins three other SVY alumni who will be competing with their college programs in Omaha.  Jesse Novak, a Rowan University student-athlete and a 2015 NCAA DIII Champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle, is competing in the 50m freestyle.  He will join Rutgers Scarlet Knight Rachel Stoddard, who will swim the 100m breaststroke and Princeton Tiger Lindsay Temple, who will swim the 200m backstroke.

“This is an incredible week in the history of the Somerset Valley YMCA swim team,” said Roth.  “The coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of Zack, Jesse, Rachel and Lindsay.  All four of these athletes truly embody our program values and the YMCA’s core values, and all of them are still very involved with SVY each in their own way.”

Warner will compete in the preliminary heats of the 100m breaststroke this Sunday, June 26th at 11:00 AM.  The top-16 qualifiers from prelims will compete in the semi-finals on Sunday evening at 8:00 PM, which will be broadcasted live on NBC.  The top-2 finishers in finals of each event quaifly to represent the United States of America in Rio this August.
