RAYS Alum Shanna Spears Honored

LSU's Spears, Hallum named to SEC Community Service Team

BATON ROUGE -- LSU swimmers Shanna Spears and Clint Hallum were each recognized on the  Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Community Service Team Monday for their outstanding contributions to the local Baton Rouge community.

As team representatives of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Spears and Hallum spearheaded the men’s and women’s squads’ involvement in various community service events coordinated through the LSU CHAMPS/Life Skills program.

Spears and Hallum were instrumental in the teams’ participation in LSU’s annual “Christmas with the Tigers” event in which the squads raised money and bought gifts for an underprivileged child during the holiday season.

The duo also helped set up the swimming and diving table at the annual “Halloween BOOzar,” where they played games with children, signed autographs and handed out candy. In addition, they each visited local hospitals to cheer up young children and give them posters.

Spears also spent time mentoring middle-school students on a weekly basis to encourage them to set goals and strive for success, and she took part in “Give Kids a Smile Day,” a nationwide movement to provide a free teeth-cleaning and examination to children whose families cannot afford oral health care.

Hallum also participated in LSU’s “Sapphires ‘N Spurs” event where he played western-themed activities with local families and helped raise money and support for the Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge.
