Ridgefield High School girls swimming placed 2nd at the State Open Championships with key contributions from our very own RAC swimmers. Our Olympic Trials Qualifier, Marcie Maguire had an outstanding high school season as a senior. At State Opens she defended her titles in both of her individual events (200 free and 100 back, achieving the All-American consideration cut in the 200 free and the automatic cut in the 100 back). She joined with Lindsey Gordon, Anna Turner, and Hannah Snyder in the 200 medley relay to win the event, achieving All-American time standard and setting a new state record. Micaela Omalley, Snyder, Gordon, and Maguire won the 400 freestyle relay and achieved an All-American qualification in that event as well. In addition to the relays, Gordon placed 3rd in the 100 breaststroke, achieving an All-American consideration cut and was 14th in the 200 IM. Snyder was 4th in the 50 free and 7th in the 100 free. Turner finished 4th in the 500 freestyle and 8th in the 200 free. Julia Weiner placed 5th in the 100 backstroke, moving up from the D final where she was seeded 22nd. Also finishing in the top 20 were Jenna Leonard in the 100 breast (13th), Omalley in 100 free (18th), and the 200 Free relay of Omalley, Leonard, Jenna Budicini, and Turner (7th).

Other key contributors to Ridgefield High School’s successful season were Elissa Clancy, Nicole Greene, Caroline Dyson, Katie Nejati, Emma Brody, Juliette Castagna, Hanna Sotolongo, Hannah Carr-Lonoff, Gillian Retter, Isabel Seward, Haley Snyder, and Jennifer Xiong who helped the Tigers finish 1st at FCIACs for the first time in Ridgefield’s history and 2nd at Class LL meet.

This season there were numerous best times and 9 of 11 swimming school records were broken by our RAC swimmers. Many would say this has been the best high school season in Ridgefield’s history.

Note: Maguire was awarded swimmer of the meet at the FCIAC championships for the third year in a row.

5 Things my Coach told me that apply in real life

Thinking Outloud

Tapering: all about adjustments to keep MOMENTUM

More than anything, the taper requires the athlete to listen to their own body and communicate with a coach. During the taper, it is not unusual for me to come into practice and start the day by sitting down and talking with each swimmer about how they feel that day. Adjustments are constantly made. Not just daily but even in the middle of a set. More yardage can be added or taken away based on how I feel and how I look in the water. Older athletes tend to have more muscle mass, this comes with maturity. More muscle needs more rest. Females GENERALLY need less taper. Taper is not a time to get out of swimming or an excuse to do less yardage. It is as important as the heavy training that you do in the middle of the season. If you approach your coach and tell them that you are exhausted when you aren’t, you will get less yardage but you won’t swim as fast as you’d like to swim come the big meet. A short sighted swimmer can take advantage of this taper opportunity. Remember that the base is already there and those times came with rest. It’s okay to give another lactate set but give yourself time to recover in between. During a taper, it is important to create the “race day”. Come in, warm up the way you would on race day, get up on the blocks and throw one down. Do it on a day that you feel good or have a predetermined day.  This helps mentally as well as physically. We learn a lot about the psychology of our swimmers in this setting, and our psychology has a lot to do with determining how fast they can swim. It goes back to the old saying, “Whether you believe you can or can’t, you’re right.” Familiarize yourself with MOMENTUM, also called the zone and peak experience. Use the competitive spirit to get something incredible out of your swims!.

The Chinese Bamboo Tree

In the far east,
They have something that's called,
The Chinese Bamboo Tree.

The Chinese Bamboo Tree takes 5 years to grow.

And when they go through a process,
Of growing it,
They have to water and fertilize the ground where it is,
Every day.

And it doesn't break through the ground,
Until the 5th year.

But once it breaks through the ground,
Within 5 weeks ,
It grows 90 feet tall.

Now the question is,
Does it grow 90 feet tall in 5 weeks ?
Or 5 years?

The answer is obvious:
It grows 90 feet tall in 5 years .

Because at any time,
Had that person stopped watering,
And nurturing,
And fertilizing,
That dream,

That bamboo tree would have died in the ground.
