Edmonton Keyano Review

11 swimmers traveled to Edmonton this past weekend to race at the Edmonton Keyano International Swim Meet. It was a fun meet to take part in with single age finals for 11, 12, 13 and 14 year olds as well as some different teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to race. This month we are focusing on long course racing to help train for our championship meets coming up in June and July.

Our team raced to 22 top three finishes! Jessica led the way with two Teddy Bear swims (1st place winners received a Keyano Bear) in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly. Jessica also raced to 2nd in the 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke and 200m Backstroke as well as a third in the 100m Backstroke! Aidan was 2nd in the 50m Backstroke, 400m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle. Sidney was had three 2nd place finishes in the 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke and 400m Freestyle and a 3rd place finish in the 50m Breaststroke. Morgan was 2nd in the 400m Freestyle and 3rd in the 200m Freestyle. Quincy swam to 3rd place finishes in the 800m Freestyle and 50m Freestyle. Avery finished 3rd in both the 100m Breaststroke and 200m Breaststroke. Sophie was 3rd in the 50m Breaststroke. Our 4x50m Freestyle Relay team of Quincy, Morgan, Avery and Jessica also finished 3rd in a very strong field! Jade, Josh and Thomas all also made finals and we had over half of our swims make finals (finishing top 10)!

Our team looked very strong overall at the meet. We had some ups and downs with results but we showed a lot of resiliency by moving on and improving the next time off the blocks. Our team races very well, going out fast from the dive and we more often than not are moving up in our heats. Laura had our most impressive swim meet that started off with the first race for our team as she blew away her heat to drop 10 seconds off of her best converted 200m IM time! Laura was our only swimmer with 100% best times as she was very aggressive and raised her level of swimming throughout the meet. Our 4x50m Freestyle Relays were fantastic as well, with Jessica, Avery, Laura and Sophie all almost breaking 30 seconds for the first time and big drops by Jade and Sidney!

The team improved their traveling skills by getting more rest each night and between heats and finals. Thanks to Jen for chaperoning, she did a great job organizing meals, snacks, driving and overseeing the team!
