Hyack Festival Youth Cup Meet Recap

Six Hurricanes raced at the Hyack Festival Youth Cup this past weekend in New Westminster. The meet is a fast age group meet that swimmers need at least one SwimBC AAA time standard to qualify. Our six swimmers did a fantastic job at racing a strong field with everyone racing in finals throughout the meet. We finished with ten medals and another eight swims just missing medals between 4th and 6th overall!

Morgan had a great meet finishing with three bronze medals in the 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle. Morgan had an incredible race in the 400m Freestyle with great race strategy, taking the lead from the start and turning it on for a big finish and out touching another swimmer for the gold medal to finish the meet for our team! Morgan is getting close to Canadian Junior Championship times in the 100m Freestyle (.5 off), 400m Freestyle (.9 off) and is improving her chances in all of the freestyle events.

Quincy raced to a pair of silver medals in the 50m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle. Her 50m Freestyle is now just .05 off of the Canadian Junior Championship time! Quincy had a big breakthrough in her 200m Butterfly, breaking 2:40 long course for the first time, she is actually the only Hurricane to ever break 2:50 for a long course 200m Butterfly. Quincy has been racing at a high level through the long course season and keeps improving her times as she sets up for a big meet at SwimBC AAA Championships in July.

Jessica added her third Canadian Junior Championship event in the 200m Breaststroke with a great swim that earned her a bronze medal. She also added 100m Butterfly to her list of AAA events and broke four of her 12&under records.

Sophie swam a very strong 200m Breaststroke for a bronze medal in the event and is starting to show big improvements as she comes back from an injury. Avery finished just outside the medals in her 100m Breaststroke.

Natalie was tremendous in her first heats and finals meet! Natalie swam to all best times and qualified for finals in the 50m Freestyle where she finished 4th overall just .3 away from a medal!

Our 4x50m Medley Relay raced to a third place finish in the 13-14 year old girls! Jessica led off with a new team record in the 50m Backstroke of 33.04, Avery had a strong 38.04 on her 50m Breaststroke leg, Quincy had a best 31.88 for her 50m Butterfly and Morgan was her best 28.49 in the 50m Freestyle to finish the relay!

Great swimming overall, the entire team has raced a lot this month and the times have just kept improving. Even off swims are rarely missing best times by much and the overall consistency is really heading in the right direction. Now the entire team will be heading to the Whistler Invitational this weekend May 27-28. Next up are our championship meets – LMR Champs June 17-18 in Langley, SwimBC AA Champs June 16-18 in Richmond and SwimBC AAA Champs July 6-9 in Kamloops.
