LC AA Champs Review

15 swimmers raced for the Hurricanes at Long Course SwimBC AA Championships this past weekend in Richmond! It was a huge improvement with 12 individual qualifiers and 3 more swimmers racing on relays after only taking 4 swimmers to Short Course SwimBC AA Championships!

Josh had an incredible meet, racing to new AAA time standards in both the 400m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley to fully qualify for Long Course SwimBC AAA Championships in three weeks! Josh finished with a gold, silver and bronze medal with a tough schedule including eight events and four more finals at the meet. Josh raced to first in the 1500m Freestyle, second in the 400m Freestyle and third in the 400m Individual Medley! He also made finals in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley.

Natalie also raced to a gold, silver and bronze medal over the weekend, smashed the AAA time standard in the 100m Freestyle and narrowly missed her third AAA time needed to qualify for Long Course SwimBC AAA Championships by .11 in the 200m Individual Medley! She raced to a gold medal in the 50m Freestyle, silver in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m Freestyle. With best times in all of her events and four finals, Natalie had an amazing first AA Championships!

In the last race of the meet, Thomas cruised ahead of his consolation final and broke a minute for the first time in the 100m Freestyle with a 58.95! In the 100m Freestyle he was ranked 47th and finished 9th overall. He also broke 27 for the first time, finished 6th in the 1500m Freestyle and raced to best times in all of his freestyle events.

Cami raced to 100% best times and made finals each day of the meet. She had big drops in the 200m Individual Medley and 200m Backstroke in finals setting new club records in each event!

Laura had an exciting meet dropping six seconds in the 200m Freestyle and moving from 37th to 7th overall in her first swim at a AA Championships! She also had a second swim in the 50m Freestyle.

Keala also raced in her first AA Championships with strong results, just missing 100% best times and dropping five seconds in her 200m Freestyle!

Lucas set a new club record in the 1500m Freestyle following his race plan and increasing his speed throughout the race.

Kourosh made finals in both the 100m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke dropping time in his two strongest events.

Jade raced in finals in the 200m Breaststroke moving up to 6th place overall and had big drops in her freestyle events!

Our 4x50m Freestyle and 4x50m Medley relay teams were very exciting each day, always moving up in the standings! Our 12&under girls team of Natalie, Emily, Keala and Sidney just missed a top eight finish by .3 in the Freestyle Relay with everyone swimming to best times in both relays! The 13-14 girls team of Grace, Cami, Jade and Laura had very fast splits in both events. The 15&over team of Marisa, Sophie, Cami and Laura also just missed a top 8 finish by .3. The 13-14 boys were 8th in the freestyle relay thanks to great swims by Lucas, Kourosh, Tyler and Josh! In the 15&over boys Thomas led the way with Lucas, Kourosh, Josh and Tyler doubling up to finish 7th in the freestyle relay and 8th in the medley relay! A special thanks to our relay only swimmers, Emily, Tyler and Grace who did a great job racing and were a big part of our team during finals!

Long Course AA Championships was a great experience for our team! We were busy in finals each night and had important contributions from all of our swimmers. The swimmers were focused in warm-ups and had some very impressive races. One skill we are getting better at is improving after an off swim, during the meet we were far from perfect but everyone had some positives through the meet. We worked together as a team and we are starting to do the little things that build up to sustainable success.

Long Course SwimBC AAA Championships is our next competition in three weeks! We now have five qualifiers – Morgan, Quincy, Josh, Aidan and Jessica! The rest of the team is encouraged to train through July and compete at the SKSC Summer Invitational July 22-23.
