Dear members of the Western Zone,
This past weekend we elected Mr. Dale Ammon to be the Western Zone Director – Non-Coach. Mr. Ammon will be a terrific resource for all of us in the Zone. His calm presence, strong business background and athlete-centric predisposition will serve the Western Zone well over the next two-years.
These will be interesting times in USA Swimming’s history. The replacement of long time Executive Director Chuck Wielgus with President/CEO Tim Hinchey, the transition from an operational/representative Board of Directors to a Governance and Strategy focused Board, and the reconstitution of the Board of Directors will require a great deal of effort and focus for the USA Swimming BoD over especially the next 12 months. Dale and Sean Redmond (Zone Director, Coach) will be instrumental in accomplishing this transition, while ensuring the voice of the Western Zone continues to be heard. The replacement of Bill Krumm in the Zone Sport Development Consultant is imminent. Sean and Dale will be instrumental in working with whoever is hired to facilitate introductions to you all.
My representation of the interests of the Western Zone over the past 4 years has been a true joy. The Zone has collectively been very supportive of your Zone Directors; Ben Britten, Sean Redmond and me over these past 4-years. Between the Board Meetings, conference calls, personal meetings with many of you, the attendance and participation in the Zone Championship Meets, the General Chairs meetings, the Zone Meetings at Convention, the LEAP evaluations for each LSC, and the ability to work with our outstanding committee chairs has been challenging, educational, inspirational and rewarding.
The excellent work of our Diversity and Inclusion Committee, our Officials’ development program, our Safe Sport leadership, and our Board of Review are all functioning in an efficient and dedicated way. Our Zone is leading the nation in many ways to the benefit of our members, athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials and our partners. You all should be encouraged to support their efforts. The budget addition to support new D&I efforts for 2017/18 are indicative of your continued support. Keep it up – it’s the right thing to do.
In summary, this letter is really about appreciation for the past 4-years. I sincerely thank you for your trust and confidence in me to represent your interests in the swimming community. I look forward to seeing you on deck sometime soon.
Immediate Past Western Zone Director, Non-Coach
