CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In keeping with the program's active involvement in community service, the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swimming teams will take part in the inaugural Charlotte Open Water Swim hosted by Swim Across America over the weekend.
The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Lake Norman YMCA at 3 p.m. Festivities include live music, food trucks and appearances by Olympians, including two-time gold medalist Ricky Berenas and others. Also included in the event will be a number of guest speakers to those in attendance, including Queens Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Planning and Leadership Development/ Director of Swimming Operations Jeff Dugale and senior all-american Alex Marshall, who is a cancer survivor.
"This weekend is very important to us as we have a perspective of hope when it comes to cancer," said Dugdale. "One of our own is a survivor. Alex has continued to thrive and benefit from events like SAA. Our goal, and we are goal-driven, is to do all we can to help doctors and cancer centers deliver cutting edge treatment."
Swim Across America's inaugural Charlotte Open Water Swim will host 150 swimmers in a fundraising effort to support local cancer research at Levine Cancer Institute. SAA, in its 30th year of operation, has raised over $70 million to date through a variety of open water swims and pool swim fundraisers. "For me, this event means a lot," said Marshall. "As a cancer survivor, raising awareness and support for cancer research provides hope and positivity in one's fight against cancer. This event means that no one is in this fight alone and we all have a goal to kick cancer's butt for good."
