Day 3 of the YMCA National Championship was another outstanding day for DCST. DCST set 5 new Team Records (2 records were broken by 2 swimmers), had 7 life-time personal best times out of 11 individual swims, and had one swimmer earn National All-American honors.
Grant Alef earned National All-American honors in the 200 yard Backstroke. In the preliminary session, Grant dropped 3.1 seconds from his previous best time to be seeded 12th in finals. In finals, he dropped another 0.9 seconds to take 10th place with a time of 1:50.18. Both of Grant’s times were lower than his previous team record. Grant has now been name a National All-American 17 times in his career which moves him into a second place tie with Emily Launer. Both swimmers are behind Matt Chambers who was named a National All-American 18 times in his career.
DCST’s 400 yard IM swimmers had outstanding time drops. In the preliminary session Michael Gordon (24th place) dropped 9.3 seconds, Chad Thompson (27th place) dropped 10.4 seconds and Valerie Jones (31st place) dropped 7.4 seconds. All three swimmers’ times were lower than the previous DCST team records. Gordon dropped an additional 1.8 seconds in finals to earn a 21st place finish.
In the Women’s 200 yard Backstroke, Emily Launer finished 32nd with a 0.4 second time improvement, while Tara Gidaszewski dropped 4.0 seconds to finish 53rd. Both swimmers’ times were faster than the previous DCST team record. The Men’s 800 Free Relay team consisting of Gordon, Cory Page, Thompson, and Alef set a new team record with their time of 7:02.46. This time was 7.5 seconds faster than their seed time. In the 100 yard Freestyle time trial, Gidaszewski had a personal best time to finisher her week off with a personal best time in all four of her individual events.
