CDSC Meet Review

22 Hollyburn Hurricanes raced at the CDSC New Year’s Invitational with very strong results for our first meet back after the Christmas break. This was a big training meet with many swimmers racing 12-13 times over the weekend which included distance events for most swimmers. We really showed a lot of great racing as most swimmers were setting new bests or just over their old best times from the end of our last training cycle.

Congratulations to Emily who raced to her SwimBC Tier I Championships times standard in the 50m Freestyle to fully qualify for the meet! Emily had a great swim meet overall. She only had to drop .07 to qualify for Tier I and instead dropped 2.19 seconds to easily break the standard with a 32.18. We almost added one more swimmer to our Tier I team with Meghan’s great swim in the 200m IM. Meghan dropped six seconds and just missed the time by .3, she’ll have a few more chances to take off the remaining time.

Cami had a big breakout swim meet racing to her first SwimBC Senior Open time standards in the 100m and 50m Backstroke events! Cami took off over a second to finish with a 1:07.93 in the 100m Backstroke and dropped more than a second in the 50m Backstroke for a 31.85. Cami was also close in the 200m Backstroke, breaking 2:30 for the first time. She also officially joined our under 30 club in the 50m Freestyle although she has broken 30 on numerous relays already.

Quincy was named the top 13-14 year old swimmer of the meet with her performances throughout. Quincy broke the meet records in the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle events and swam to nine first place finishes out of 11 events setting six team records. Jessica was also very impressive with two meet records in the 100m Backstroke and 100m Breaststroke. Jessica finished first in seven events, broke three team records at the meet and added the 100m Backstroke to her event list for SwimBC Senior Open.

There was more great racing throughout the weekend. We had a lot of big distance swims including Morgan dropping nine seconds in the 800m Freestyle, Sidney taking off 12 seconds in her 800m Freestyle and Josh breaking 19 minutes for the first time in the 1500m Freestyle. Sidney also dropped 12 seconds in the 400m IM. Josh almost broke 2:30 in the 200m Backstroke after a 10 second drop. Thomas went 57 in the 100m Freestyle. Sarah broke 40 in the 50m Freestyle. Keala had a big 17 second drop in the 200m Backstroke. Meghan dropped time in all three of her backstroke events. Brooke took off at least five seconds in all four of her events including a 10 second drop in her 200m IM. Emily’s 200m Free and 200m Breaststroke had 16 and 13 second improvements. Tiger had 10 second drops in his 100m Breaststroke, 200m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle and 100m IM. Lucas had big drops in his 400m events and the 200m Butterfly. Kourosh sprinted very well and just missed his Tier II time in the 50m Freestyle by .04. Kiersa had a great swim in the 200m IM taking off six seconds. Sophie made improvements in her 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle. Jessica’s 400m Freestyle was great, breaking 5 minutes for the first time. Tyler had an all round great meet but was especially impressive with his Tier I time in the 200m Butterfly. Natalie raced to her Tier I time in the 100m Backstroke.

Our relays were tremendous at the meet with our 13-14 year old relays finishing first in all three events. On Friday night Josh, Jessica, Morgan and Tyler raced to first in the 13-14 4x50m Mixed Medley Relay. Saturday Cami, Jessica, Morgan and Quincy were first and set a new meet record in the 13-14 4x50m Medley Relay. Sunday was a great day for our girls with Hollyburn winning all three age groups in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay and setting two meet records! The 11-12 4x50m Freestyle Relay started it off with a win by Keala, Natalie, Emily and Sidney. Next Morgan, Cami, Quincy and Jessica set a new record in the 13-14 4x50m Freestyle Relay. Our 15&over girls team with Laura, Morgan, Sophie and Quincy also touched first! A lot of big teams have swam relays at this meet over the past 10 years so it’s a great sign that we are beating records in multiple age groups!
