West Coast Open Review

Our Hurricanes raced at the West Coast Open this past weekend with very strong results. This was a long course training meet for the 15 swimmers who participated with some long sessions both days. The team had a great time bonding in the sun during each session and had to focus on managing themselves through a long day, an important skill as we head towards more heats and finals meets through the end of the season.

A few highlights:

Meghan swam to team records in both the 400m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke and just missed the time in the 200m Freestyle! She swam to best times in all of her events and qualified for the Hyack Festival Youth Cup in both her freestyle events.

Josh had a great meet also racing to all best times, almost all breaking his best converted short course times, great swimming for this time in the long course season! His results showed his focus on extending his stroke in practice and working on stroke rate over the past few weeks.

Sidney swam the 200m Butterfly with great splits, keeping her third and fourth 50 splits within .5 of her second 50 to break her team record by four seconds!

200m Freestyle was a big event for us, everyone went best times with Cami taking off 9 seconds, Keala dropping 8 seconds, Meghan 7 seconds, and both Josh and Emily raced to bests as well. Everyone knows it is my favorite event for them to figure out which is definitely harder long course.

Jonathan swam in his first long course meet and did a great job in all of his races!

Josh and Lucas had a great race in the 200m Individual Medley, pushing each other to best times and both qualifying for SwimBC Tier II Championships in the event!

This meet was a great motivator for what we need to accomplish in practice over the next few weeks. We will now prepare to race at the end of the month, some swimmers are qualified for the Hyack Festival Youth Cup May 18-20 and then our entire team can race at both the Whistler Invitational May 26-27 and the Kamloops Invitational June 1-3 before we head into SwimBC Tier I and Tier II Championships in June/July.
