Hyack Festival Youth Cup Recap

Our team had 12 swimmers compete at Hyack’s Festival Youth Cup this past weekend, a big improvement over last year when we only had 6 swimmers qualified to race at the meet! It was a busy weekend with our swimmers getting off the blocks numerous times between heats and finals. The meet was the definition of a training meet with the swimmers putting in big efforts to race long course while we have been working hard in practice. These training meets take a different set of mental skills as most swimmers are not racing at their best times but it is still important to put in speed and tactics that swimmers need to rely on at their performance meets. Our swimmers moved up in the standings more often than not and showed a lot of toughness on the second half of races, which has been a focus in practice.

The meet rewards highest point scorers for each set of events and our team ended up with three winners. Jessica was the top 12-13 100/200m Breaststroke swimmer. Quincy was the top 14-15 50/100m Freestyle swimmer. Cami was the top 14-15 100/200m Backstroke swimmer.

The meet also gave out prizes for the top relay team in each age group. Our 13-14 year old girls won both the 4x50m Medley and 4x50m Freestyle Relays! The Medley Relay consisted of Olivia, Jessica, Morgan and Quincy, which ran away with the event winning by more than four seconds! It was a little closer in the Freestyle Relay but our team of Natalie, Jessica, Quincy and Morgan won by 1.5 seconds!

Our team was not only deeper than it was a year ago but showed incredible performance with the number of second swims throughout the meet. Quincy and Jessica both qualified for second swims in all nine of their events! Morgan, Sidney, Cami, Olivia, Avery, Lucas and Kourosh also made finals in multiple events.

Meghan just qualified for the meet two weeks ago and had an incredible 400m Freestyle finishing 5th and improving her club record by nine seconds with her time of 5:36.94!

Natalie did race to best times in all of her events and broke 30 seconds for the first time long course in her 50m Freestyle!

These meets are important in our swimmer’s development and we showed a lot of resiliency throughout the meet. Now we look forward to our team meets the next two weekends, racing short course in Whistler May 26-27 and long course in Kamloops June 1-3!
