October 1, 2018
I hope everyone had a great weekend! It’s hard to believe we are in October. I also just realized we are exactly 12-weeks out from Christmas Eve. Crazy!
Fall Break Practice Schedule
This week is WCSD’s Fall Break. RENO will have normal practice schedule this week. This includes the return of dryland during the week for the Orange through Senior groups.
King of the Hill
A big thank you to all the RENO families who have registered for the King of the Hill meet. We are currently at 71 RENO swimmers and 425+ total swimmers for the meet. Sunday’s session is now full, but there is still room for swimmers to register for Friday and Saturday.
If you have yet to register, you can do so in two ways: online through SwimConnection or by mail. Please register ASAP.
If you’d prefer to mail your registration, click here for the meet sheet.
Volunteers Needed for Meet
Our Meet Director, Teri Galvin, sent out an email last night with volunteer information. RENO’s meets would not be successful without the help of our parent volunteers. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
The parents of Reno Aquatic Club have diverse backgrounds when it comes to swimming. Some parents participated as age groupers/high school swimmers, others competed at the collegiate level, and we have parents who haven’t swum a lap in their life. We also have many parents who come from other sports.
Swimming is such a unique sport and it can be difficult to understand at times – as swimmers and parents. Because of this, I have decided to add a “Parent Education” section in each weekly email. I envision this space being used to explain the ins and outs of training, how swim meets work, what makes an excellent swim parent, and more.
RENO has improved so much over the last year, and I am happy with how things are going… but it is crucial to have a positive culture on the team if we want to continue to improve. I am hoping this “Parent Education” section will help continue moving the team in a positive direction.
Recently, I read an article in a parenting magazine that highlighted some issues with youth sports. In general, with youth sports today, it seems like parents and coaches often clash. Whether it is the amount of playing time the child receives, the style of training, or feeling like the coach isn’t qualified... there can be tension between coach and parent.
The following quote highlights the importance of removing the tension for the benefit of your child:
“As parents, we want our children to remember their journey through sports for all the right reasons, and that requires parents working with – and not against – coaches. Being a good youth sports parent is full of challenges. But when parents enter the season viewing their child’s coach as an ally – not the enemy – and focus on building relationships instead of sabotaging them, then a rewarding season can be enjoyed by all. And that’s what every young athlete deserves.”
Specifically, with RENO, I encourage you to always reach out to me with questions or concerns. If you have an issue, please voice your concern to me so I can address the situation before it becomes a major issue. The coaching staff is here to help your child succeed – in and out of the pool. We want to be an ally in your child’s development.
We Need More Officials
If you have an interest in becoming more involved with your child’s swimming, I strongly encourage you to become an official. You do not have to have any swim experience. We are lucky to have a great training situation in Northern Nevada, and they will teach you everything you need to know.
Being an official helps you satisfy RENO’s volunteer requirements plus you get a front-row seat and free food at swim meets!
There will be a clinic for new/interested officials in Reno on Saturday, October 27 from 9 AM – 12 PM. Please click here for more information.
Here are the rest of the meets for 2018:

RENO has secured a hotel block for State. We have 25 rooms available at the Best Western Plus (1553 N Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV). The rate is $99 plus tax per night. The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast buffet and it is close to the pool.
