Training Schedule Changes During The Renovation

Hi All,

Renovation Training Schedule Changes

(NEW SCHEDULE AT THE END OF THIS POST)

As mentioned in a recent email, we are transitioning to a new training schedule beginning Monday, November 5th. This is a temporary change that coincides with the renovation of the long course pool and other facility improvements here at BSAC. We may make some additional schedule tweaks as we move forward and have some real world feedback. Any new changes will be posted and emailed so please keep your eyes open for that information. Please note. If your family has a major issue with any of the changes, let your training group coach know.  We will do what we can to accommodate any major disruptions.

While these temporary changes may make for some short term inconveniences, it will make for a true long term benefit for our swimmers, their families and the members of our community as a whole for many years to come. A renovated long course facility, as well as other BSAC upgrades, will provide our members with one of the best training facilities in all of the Southeast. I know the staff is excited about how that will allow us to better serve our athletes.

We will be sending out at BSAC-wide email that will highlight the upgrades and enhancements being made throughout the campus. I wanted to post this email prior to that one so our families could make arrangements to follow the schedule beginning next Monday.

A special thanks goes to my long time friend and our CEO, Chuck Burgess. Chuck has been working tirelessly behind the scenes making this come to fruition for many, many years. So you know, before he was the BSAC CEO, Chuck was a nationally recognized club coach. We spent many years battling each other in the age group trenches. We are extremely fortunate to have someone who is passionate about competitive swimming in that role. That is rarely the case at large institutional facilities. It is yet another reason I made the move here to BSAC a couple of years ago. With all that is happening in and out of the pool, It’s a good time to be a part of BSAC!

Mining For Gold

My Father instilled a concept in me and my siblings from a very young age called, “mining for gold”. When you feel like you have fallen into a whole in some aspect of your life, start mining for gold. In essence, try to find an unexpected positive outcome from what others perceive as a bad situation. I have faced situations far more severe in my coaching career that being forced into a ten (10 lane training pool. Those experiences help me find a lot of gold nuggets along the way. Here’s one relevant example.

Back in 2005, my team at the time, TBAY, had access to two (2) downtown Tampa locations, Tampa Prep and The Academy of Holy Names. Right after high school states, we realized that the Tampa Prep pool had a leak. It needed to be shut down and repaired. No worries, we thought. We can use the ten (10) lane pool at Academy. Well, their pool was deemed to be a couple of inches too shallow for diving. Their pool had to shut down for a renovation as well.

We had little options.

We finally secured a four (4) lane pool space in a city operated pool called. “The Loretta Ingraham Center”; which is located near the International Plaza mall. Let me repeat...four (4) lanes. Our training group sizes were around forty (40) each. Within the senior group, we had more than half as Junior National or above qualifiers. The same was true of our age groupers; with at least half where Junior Olympic (FLAGS) qualifiers in that group as well. In essence, we were a high performing team with the need for a lot of training and space.

We had fallen in a hole. It was time to start mining for gold.

When you have less pool space and time, you have to get incredibly organized. Every second, every lap has to have purpose and meaning. We had to change up dryland, classroom sessions and add more clinics. In short, we got hyper-focused on using our assets to the best of their ability.

After months of training in this manner, our pools reopened. Instead of going back to a much more relaxed use of our time, we stay hyper-focused. We appreciated what we had and were inspired as a staff and athletes to use our abundant resources more wisely. Sometimes you need to lose something to remind you how valuable that something is. Fortunately, instead of thinking, “whoa is us”, we made a work around as a team; one that positively affected the swimmers and program when we returned to our normal training locations.

How did the swimmers and team benefit? Well, later that summer, those same swimmers went on to win a combined USA Swimming Junior National team championship. Would we have won if we did not have to move training locations? Maybe. But the take away is that the staff and swimmers had to become more mentally tough and focused; two incredibly important aspects of a champion's behavior and mindset.

I was incredibly proud of those swimmers and families. Not only did they mine for gold in a tough situation, they received gold on the podium at the nation’s highest level 18 & Under competition. Knowing the back story made the win even more sweet.

Now it’s our time to mine for gold. How will our swimmers, staff and families use this opportunity to grow? What golden nuggets will we find during this process? I am excited about the challenge and look forward to returning our swimmers to the long course pool next spring better than we left it.

Thanks in advance for your understanding in this regard and let’s always make the most of our opportunities.
