RENO News - 12/3/2018

I hope you had a great weekend! There are several new announcements this week, including our Christmas break practice schedule. Please read through the email and if you have any questions, let me know.

See’s Candy Fundraiser

Thank you to all who participated in this year’s fundraiser. If you have any outstanding orders, tonight is the absolute latest you can turn in forms. Please be sure the forms and money are turned in by 7:30 PM at Northwest Pool.

Information about disbursement of the orders will be coming soon. A big thank you to Russ and Brook Hollinger for all the help coordinating this fundraiser.

Junior Nationals

Emma Karam will be representing RENO at the 2018 USA Swimming Winter Junior National Championships in Austin, Texas this week. Junior Nationals is a very prestigious accomplishment. The meet will feature some of the fastest 18-and-under swimmers in the country. Emma swims the 100 back on Friday and the 200 back on Saturday. She will also participate in two time trials. Click here to follow all the action from Texas.

This is a great opportunity for Emma, and I look forward to more RENO swimmers making the Junior National time standards in the coming years.

I will be at the meet and not at practice Wednesday – Saturday. I will be available via email while I am in Texas.

Parent/Alumni Party

Our parent/alumni party is quickly approaching. Please RSVP here by December 7th.

New Coach – Vanessa Fillmore

I am excited to announce a new addition to the RENO coaching staff. Vanessa Fillmore has joined the team. She will be primarily assisting Coach Erin with the Blue and Mini RENO groups. In addition, she is also helping out two days a week with the Senior and Orange groups.

Vanessa has an extensive background in swimming and private swim lessons. She grew up in Southern Nevada swimming for Boulder City-Henderson. Her family moved to Michigan where she continued to swim for a couple of teams in Michigan. While there she started teaching lessons and coaching. Her family moved to Reno last winter, and she swam with our Senior group.

Vanessa has already done a tremendous job, and I am excited to have her on board!

Pacific Distance Camp

Congratulations to Aidan Pflieger for being selected to the Pacific Swimming Distance Camp. Pacific selected 24 swimmers (12 female/12 male) to attend a 4-day training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. Way to go, Aidan!

Pacific Zone-4 All Star Meet

The Annual Zone All-Star Meet is March 3 – 4 in Sunnyvale, CA. This meet is always a great time and RENO swimmers look forward to it every year. The coaching staff highly recommends any swimmer who meets the qualifying requirements to apply. The minimum requirements include:

  • Must be 9 – 14 years old
  • Must have a minimum of 3 USA Swimming “BB” time standards in his/her age on March 3. Click here to view the standards.
  • Swimmer cannot have participated at a higher-level all-star meet before (Western Zones, North American Challenge Cup, Pacific Coast)

The deadline to mail an entry is Tuesday, January 15 or hand-delivered at the Carson meet on January 20th by 2:00 PM.

Parent Education

My goal with the “Parent Education” section is to help shed light on the ins and outs of the sport of swimming, so our parents can be more knowledgeable. In addition, I hope to share information that you can then use with your child, especially if your child is going through a rough patch (examples: he/she had a challenging practice, he/she had a bad swim at a meet, etc.). If the messaging to the swimmer is consistent coming from the coaches and parents, we will be able to better help him/her accomplish his/her goals.

With my National group, I often remind them to try and get better every day, every practice, every set, every length of the pool, and every stroke. This is very similar to the “One-Percent Rule” Jon Gordon shares in his book The Power of a Positive Team. He says:

“It’s a simple rule I share with teams to help them create excellence. The rule says to give one percent more time, energy, effort, focus, and care today than you gave yesterday. Each day, give more than you did the day before.

Obviously, you can’t calculate one percent, but you can push yourself more today than you did yesterday. You can improve and get better today. You can strive for excellence and work to become your best. You can tune out distractions and focus even more on what matters most.

I worked with a college women’s lacrosse team of 35 players who were all implementing the one percent rule. They said if each person gives one percent more each day that’s 35 percent daily, and over time, this extra percent will produce big results. It did. They had incredible growth by pursuing both individual and team excellence.”

  • Jon Gordon

To go along with encouraging the swimmers to give a little more effort each day, I constantly remind them not to waste an opportunity to get better. Every day, every practice, every set, every length of the pool, and every stroke is an opportunity – don’t waste it!

If a swimmer focuses on getting better each day and not wasting opportunities, he/she will accomplish outstanding achievements.

Each week, I will post the “Parent Education” section on the website.  Click here to read the archived articles.
