Jessica Deglau Invitational Review
May 3, 2019 |

We had 27 swimmers participate at the Jessica Deglau Invitational
at UBC Pool this past weekend. The meet consisted of two different
competitions, an A Meet with timed finals and an AA Meet for
swimmers to race heats and finals.
We had 12 swimmers in the A Meet, where they gained experience
racing in the long course format. All the swimmers in our A meet
were successful in racing to best times and swimming events for the
first time long course. Claire, Saige and Yiyang all swam the
200m Freestyle for the first time long course! Addison,
Rebecca, Stella and Yiyang competed in their
first long course 200m Breaststroke! Esme and Shae raced
their first long course 200m Backstroke!
Everyone had some great breakthrough swims focusing on long course racing skills! Claire having an incredible 200m Freestyle with strong powerful strokes the entire race! Saige raced out very fast to start her 100m Freestyle! Addison kept her strokes long on her breakouts and through her 200m Freestyle! Rebecca had great splits throughout her 200m Individual Medley and really finished her freestyle with some speed! Stella got her strokerate up throughout her entire 100m Backstroke! Tessa finished her lengths with a lot of power in her 100m Freestyle! Esme really raced on her breakouts in her 100m Freestyle! Yiyang finished his 200m Breaststroke with really strong kicks and a fast last 50! Tiger raced his freestyle really well to finish his 200m Individual Medley! Declan descended his 50's in his 200m Freestyle, racing very fast on the last 50! Shae had a lot of speed through the second half of her 50m Freestyle! Marcus kept his strong long and powerful throughout his 200m Breaststroke!

The AA Meet was a great chance for our swimmers to race events in
heats and finals. It was a training meet for the swimmers with the
focus on basic race strategy in the heats and improving times in
finals. Our older swimmers raced a few events they don't race
as often and our younger swimmers gained more long course
experience.
Sarah Yu had a great meet, racing to her first SwimBC Age Group
Championships time standards in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle
and 200m Breaststroke. Sarah raced in finals for the first time and
did a great job improving her times from her morning swims.
Alessandra had incredible swims in her 200m Backstroke and
100m Freestyle! Alessandra even raced a swim-off in the 100m
Freestyle in her heats and finals meet, something a lot of our
swimmers have never done. Emily had great speed in the second half
of her 50m Freestyle to out touch the field in finals! Morgan
improved her second half of her 100m Butterfly! Quincy swam well in
heats and improved her times consistently in finals with aggressive
racing in all of her events! Sidney had a very well paced 200m
Butterfly in heats and raced to a best 200m Backstroke as her third
event in a row in finals! Josh got faster and faster all weekend
with some pretty impressive racing after a few days out of the pool
heading into the meet for a school camp! Keala really raced well in
her 200m Breaststroke in finals, improving splits from a solid swim
in heats! Meghan's speed in butterfly was fabulous, helping her to
great swims in her 200m Individual Medley and 100m Butterfly! Cami
put together really strong races in finals in her Backstroke
events, improving her breakout speed and strokerate! Olivia was
really impressive in her racing strategy in the 200m Breaststroke
in both heats and finals! Brooke really swam the second 25 of each
50 well with fast stroke rate and keeping her stroke length which
improved her times in everything! Lucas held his speed really well
in the 100m Butterfly and raced hard through a busy schedule!
Jessica went out really strong in her 400m Freestyle and kept her
stroke count on all of her breakouts! Natalie showed some
great speed getting up on top of the water in her
breakouts!
The meet set us up well for the rest of the long course season
where our swimmers will train and prepare for big performances at
SwimBC's Championships meets!
