Intermountain Classic

RENO had an outstanding performance at last weekend’s Intermountain Classic in Carson City. We had countless best times and several new time standards were achieved (Sectionals, Summer Sanders, Far Westerns, Pacific JOs, and State cuts). More importantly, it appeared the swimmers were having an enjoyable experience. 

I was really impressed with how RENO swimmers finished their races. This is a reflection of the swimmers hard work in the pool and our coaching philosophy of focusing on aerobic development.

We had 58 RENO swimmers participate in the meet and nearly every swimmer achieved multiple best times. It was definitely a great kick-off to the summer season. I am looking forward to seeing continued improvements as the long course season progresses.

Congratulations to Angelo Aramini (10-under boys), Marni Kraemer (10-under girls) and Aidan Pflieger (13-14 boys) for winning high point.

RENO Top-Ten

We had several swims last weekend qualify as top-ten times in RENO history. With our club’s storied history, our top-ten times are the fastest and deepest in the area, so a top-ten performance is very impressive. Congratulations to the following swimmers:

9-10 Girls

Marni Kraemer – 6th – 100 free, 6th – 200 free, 6th – 100 back, 10th – 50 back

9-10 Boys

Angelo Aramini – 9th – 100 free

11-12 Girls

Eleanor Raker – 7th – 800 free, 7th – 1500 free

13-14 Girls

Aces Game – June 10

Last week, packets were distributed to the swimmers for our annual Reno Aces fundraiser. If your child did not bring one home, please check with his/her coach.

The game is a fundraiser, but it is also a great opportunity to spend time as a team away from the pool. Our goal is to sell 200 tickets. Packets are due June 3 and 4.

Please be sure to register for the RENO Gamble ASAP. We currently only have 10 RENO swimmers signed up. We don’t want to run the risk of the meet filling up before the bulk of our team is registered.

Parent Education

With the long course season officially underway, now is a great time for athletes to set and reevaluate their goals. Without goals, swimming can quickly turn into a grind. It is important for our athletes to set realistic goals to keep them motivated and engaged. 

Here are six great goal-setting tips from TrueSport:

1.  For most youth athletes, goals should be process-oriented: namely, what the athlete should individually focus on while practicing a skill. For example, a swimmer can set a goal to take 4 dolphin kicks off each wall and this will help him/her achieve faster times.

2. Try not to base goals around championships or outcomes of games because there’s so much that the athlete can’t control. It is important for the athlete to set goals that are within their control. Swimmers can't dictate what the person in the lane next to them is going to do; they can only control themselves. Therefore it is important to set goals within the athletes own control.

3. Let your athlete set their own goals or work with their coach to set some. When a parent sets the goals for the athlete, the ownership of the goal—and the joy the athlete feels when they achieve it—is significantly compromised. You can certainly prompt them—what skills do you think you’d like to improve on?—but they get to fill in the blanks.

4. Realize that goals don’t all have to be athletically oriented. Maybe you could ask your child if they have some academic or social goals. Tackling a challenging book chapter by chapter is a great way to illustrate the patience, dedication, and hard work it takes to reach a goal.

I would also add that goals don't always have to be time related. Sometimes -- in swimming especially -- we get very focused on best times and time standards. Some swimmers thrive with time-goals; for others it is a detrimental to improvement. An example of a non-time related goal would be for a swimmer to set a goal to legally finish a 400 IM at the next meet.

5.  Have your child write down their goals, and then have a discussion (again, they lead) about how they might reach them, helping them break them down into smaller chunks. In addition to thinking about what is appropriate for your child’s age, personality and ability, a good guideline is to make the goals or chunks SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, and Timely.

6.  Check in with your child on their goals periodically. If you saw your athlete realize a piece of their goal—or their entire goal—during practice or a competition, definitely compliment them. But don’t let the goal turn into a source of tension in your house, and if the goal seems to be fading into the background out of frustration or attention, gently ask your child about it. If need be, help them readjust it so they can taste success.
