Mel Zajac Review

Five Hurricanes swimmers raced at one of the top Junior meets (swimmers 18&under) in North America this past weekend at the Mel Zajac International Swim Meet at the UBC Pool. The meet included National Junior teams from both Canada and the United States as well as top swimmers (with nationally ranked 19&overs too) from across both countries with over 800 swimmers participating. A top meet through a tough training cycle is always a good test for swimmers as they prepare for their performance meets this summer. The meet involved long days on deck with warm-ups starting at 7:30am and preliminaries going through until the warm-ups for finals started at 4:30pm. Our swimmers gained experience managing their performance through a long session against top competition.

Our swimmers had a strong showing with both Quincy and Jessica racing to the Junior B finals, which meant a top 20 finish in their event. Quincy made it in the 50m Freestyle and Jessica in the 50m Backstroke.

Jessica had a big meet, swimming breaststroke really well on the second half of her races, swimming under her best times in both the 100m Breaststroke and 200m Breaststroke! Her time of 2:47.13 in the 200m Breaststroke qualified her to swim the event at the Canadian Junior Championships this summer! Jessica also raced to best times in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly!

Quincy was right on her best times throughout the meet, moving up in the rankings and finishing just outside finals in her 200m Freestyle as well. She had a really strong 400m Freestyle racing to a new best time and split very well in her 200m Butterfly to set a new best!

Cami set a new best in the 50m Butterfly and set new season bests in her backstroke events.

Olivia had great starts to her races, showing a lot of front end speed that we have been working on.

Morgan raced to best times in both her 200m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly, almost breaking 30 seconds with a 30.00 in the 50m Butterfly!

Our 4x100m Medley Relay Team qualified for Canadian Junior Championships with a time of 4:31.89, three seconds under the 18&under time standard! It was our first relay qualifying time for the meet, thanks to great swims from the team of Cami, Jessica, Olivia and Quincy! Cami raced a fast backstroke leg to start the relay off on the right track! Jessica was a second under her best time in the breaststroke, with a really fast first 50m! Olivia also went out very fast in the first 50m of her butterfly swim and she also finished almost a second under her best time! Quincy brought the relay home with a strong freestyle. The team finished 17th overall, a great spot in the standings against national and provincial teams from across the country as well as top clubs racing their senior swimmers.

Our team will now be traveling to Kamloops next weekend as our last competition before SwimBC Age Group Championships at the end of June and SwimBC Provincial Championships in early July.
