June 11, 2019
I hope everyone who attended last night’s Aces game had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Diane Dale for organizing the event! I posted some photos from the event on our Facebook and Instagram pages. I didn’t get any pictures of the younger swimmers. If a parent took some photos, please send them my way. Thank you!
I will be out of town starting Wednesday afternoon until Sunday night. I will have limited access to my email. I will do my best to respond in a timely matter.
Summer Sanders Recap
12 RENO swimmers competed in the Summer Sanders Senior meet in Roseville, CA. The meet is always competitive and it brings in swimmers from several states including many college athletes and teams.
The 2018 meet was a breakthrough meet for RENO. Last year, several swimmers picked up their first Sectional time standards. The 2019 version proved to be another successful meet! Several new team records were set, new qualifying standards were achieved, and we walked away with a best time rate of 60% which is great for a mid-season senior-level meet. In addition, our girls team finished in 6th place out of 50+ teams
Four new team records were set over the weekend. Congratulations to Katelyn Buono for setting a new 15-16 girls record in the 100 back. She went a 1:06.88 which broke the old record of 1:06.94 set by Hannah Hudson in 2016.
Emma Karam set three new team records for 13-14 girls. In the 100 free, Emma went a 59.62 which broke the old record of 59.89 set in 2001 by Katy Houston. She also re-broke her own records in the 100 and 200 backstroke. In the 100 back she went 1:04.19 (her old best was 1:06.12). In the 200 back, Emma swam a 2:16.28 (her old best was 2:20.28).
In addition to setting the team records, Emma qualified for Summer Junior Nationals in both backstroke events. Summer Juniors is the premier meet for swimmers 18-under in the USA. It has been a few years since RENO had a swimmer qualify for Summer Juniors. Our goal is to get many more to qualify in the coming years!
Here are other highlights from the meet:
Elena Aramini – Best time in the 100 free
Jack Armbrecht – 100% best times
Katelyn Buono – 100% best times, 3rd place in the 100 back, 5th place in the 200 IM and 200 back, 7th place in the 400 IM, new Futures time standards in the 100 back, 200 back, and 400 IM
Addison Crain – Best time in the 200 fly

Nathan McAlister – Best time in the 200 fly, second swims in 4 events
David McLean – Best times in 3 events, second swims in two events, new Sectional cut in the 200 IM

This week’s Parent Education is important and does require action on your part. I will be sending more reminders about this until the June 23rd deadline.
A few weeks ago, USA Swimming released their new Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP). This policy is mandated by SafeSport and USA Swimming and all teams affiliated with USA Swimming are required to abide by it.
Many of the policies in the new MAAPP were already followed by Reno Aquatic Club, but there are some changes we need to implement. One of these being that each family must acknowledge the policy on an annual basis. We have set up a link on our website with the policy. Please visit this link and acknowledge you have read it by clicking the “Attend” button.
All team families MUST acknowledge the MAAPP by June 23, 2019 for their swimmer to remain a member in good standing of Reno Aquatic Club and participate in acitivities of the Club including practices and swim meets.
Another new component is all 18+ swimmers on RENO must do the adult athlete protection training. All affected athletes have been notified of this training and it also must be finished by June 23.
The new policy is created to protect our athletes. I believe we need to continue to educate and empower our swimmers. If they are uncomfortable with a coach and/or an adult, they need to be able to voice their concerns. Within Pacific Zone-4 (the zone that RENO is a part of), there have been discussions of doing more in-depth training for our swimmers. I will keep you posted and be sharing more information in the coming months.
Each week, I will post the “Parent Education” section on the website. Click here to read the archived articles.
