Summer Provincials Review

The Hurricanes had 10 swimmers compete at the SwimBC Provincial Championships in Victoria last weekend. Our team had a great meet with everyone racing to best times throughout the competition. The team had numerous scoring swims racing again in finals each day of the meet with the majority of our swimmers still having another year in their age group.

Quincy had a really strong meet racing to new team records in the 50m Freestyle and 800m Freestyle and close to her best times in all of her other events. She was busy in finals, placing top 16 in all six of the freestyle events and just missing a medal with 4th place finishes in both the 50m and 100m Freestyles.

Sidney had a great 1500m Freestyle where she was under her best times for the 400m Freestyle, 800m Freestyle and 1500m Freestyle during the race! Her time of 18:59.34 broke 19 minutes and set a new club record! She also raced to new best times in the 200m Breaststroke, 200m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle and scored points with top 16 finishes in the 1500m Freestyle, 200m Breaststroke, 400m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle!

Josh got off to a fantastic start to the meet dropping eight seconds off of his 200m Backstroke and ten seconds from his 800m Freestyle! His time of 9:17.37 set a new team record in the 800m Freestyle! He had a busy schedule with all of his events in just two days but raced well and raced to top 16 finishes in four of his events!

Keala was racing at her first Provincials and raced to best times every time she went off the blocks! She broke 30 seconds in the 50m Freestyle for the first time long course and was out very fast in her 100m Breaststroke!

Cami had a very good meet racing to season best times in all of her events and doing a great job on our relays! Cami broke her own club record in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 32.54!

Olivia competed in the 15&over age group for the first time and narrowly missed finals in her butterfly and individual medley events! She set new best times in the 200m Breaststroke, 200m Butterfly and 100m Breaststroke with powerful walls and very strong breakouts!

Emily also competed at her first Provincials and did a great job in both of her individual events! Emily had an incredible 50m Butterfly on our Medley Relay and 50m Freestyle on the Freestyle Relay!

Lucas’s 100m Butterfly was a really fantastic swim, with a very fast first 50 of 28.9 and holding his stroke together to finish with a second improvement and a time of 1:02.97! He also had a great best time to lead off the Mixed Freestyle Relay!

Jessica had an outstanding swim in her 200m Breaststroke finishing with a time of 2:42.87, four seconds under her previous best and setting a new team record! Jessica has been working on holding her stroke and lowering her stroke count over the past few months and really put it together this weekend! Jessica raced to second swims in both the 100m Breaststroke and 200m Breaststroke at her first Provincials in the 15&over age group!

Natalie had a lot of speed going out in her events and really stepped up on the relays! She raced to a new 50m Backstroke best time and had a great 50m Freestyle to finish the meet on the 4x50m Freestyle Relay!

Once again we had great relays throughout the meet. Our mixed 4x50m Freestyle Relay team of Lucas, Quincy, Natalie and Josh had a strong result against the older swimmers from all of the top clubs! In the 13-14 age group, Natalie, Sidney, Emily and Keala teamed up for both the 4x50m Medley Relay and 4x50m Freestyle Relay. The girls all swam to best times in both relays as they finished 12th in the Freestyle Relay and 15th in the Medley Relay! Our 15&over Girls team of Cami, Jessica, Olivia and Quincy raced to 10th in the 4x50m Medley Relay and 11th in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay with big best times in both races. It will be fun to watch our 15&over girls as they move up each year in the top age group.

Open Water Championships
Sidney had a great race, using her drafting skills and finishing 4th in the 14&under 2km swim, finishing with a best time by over two minutes of 27:45! Quincy finished the open 5km swim 9th overall, racing to a total time of 1:08:46, her 2km split was faster than her 2km race from last year! Jade also bettered her time by five minutes in the open 5km swim with a time of 1:15:35! It was a great way to finish the meet!
