Team Updates and Fall Swim

August 8, 2020

Hello Stingray Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family well and that you had a safe summer given everything that’s been going on. However, I also understand that some families have suffered the loss of a family member or friend during this time and my condolences go out to those who have experienced such a loss (or losses).

I, first and foremost, want to thank the Benicia Stingray Swim Team Board (in no particular order): Anna Fade, Duane & Jill Magno, Victor Vitale, Brooke King, Cyndee Bogard, Jen Smith, Tanja Kopper, and Chris & Emie Ambrose for their unwavering dedication and sometimes endless Zoom meetings throughout the year, especially building up to our summer camp.  While it wasn’t the summer all of us wanted or anticipated, we made it the best we could have and are grateful to be able to get kids into the water in July.  We hope those who were able to participate found it to be a safe activity to participate in...and had some fun in the pool!

Since 2020 appears to be a year of change and also the opportunity to explore activities we normally would not have the time for, we also want to inform you that our coaches, Steve and Joe, have decided to pursue other opportunities outside of coaching the Stingrays.  We are thankful for the years they have dedicated to the team and wish them well moving forward.  In case anyone is curious of what they might be up to…Coach Joe recently took a new teaching job at a middle school and Coach Steve was recently notified that two of his art pieces (he is an artist and an art teacher) will be on exhibit at the de Young museum.  If you’d like to read an article about this, click HERE .  Congratulations to both on your new endeavours!!

With that said, the Board of Directors is excited to announce that we have hired a new head coach, Mariska Field.  Mariska comes to us with 20+ years of coaching experience including recreational summer leagues, year round swim teams, and high school teams.  In fact, some of you might be familiar with her as she is Benicia High School’s Head Coach and a parent on our team.  If you would like to learn more about Mariska, please read her bio on our website. Please join us in welcoming Mariska on board!

Last, but not least, we are equally excited to announce our Fall Camp ...which will be starting much earlier than previous years!!!  There will be  two 4½ week sessions: the first session will run from Aug. 17th - Sept. 16th and the second session will run from Sept. 17th to October 16th.  Camp sessions will run in 45 minute sessions and will start at 3:30, 4:30, and 5:30.  A change from summer is that we are only allotted five lanes per session from the city, which means five swimmers per session (so it will run similarly to a group clinic and will focus on technique).  We will run MWF and a TTH session for each fall camp to enable more spaces for our swimmers to participate EITHER in the first OR the second camp session.  Sign-ups will occur soon and more information will follow shortly.  We will have the waiver, sign-up genius, and payment (Venmo) information out as soon as it is ready.

Until then… Stay safe and take care,

Janelle Mincy
