Hurricanes Pentathlon Review

In a normal season, we would have been attending a team travel meet around this time so we have been trying to give our swimmers the chance to get into racing mode and swim a lot of events. It’s a little bit different racing in our own pool against only our team but the swimmers are making the most of it and we had really great results again!

Our Swim Academy swimmers did a fantastic job of racing new events, including the 100m Individual Medley for the first time! It was so great to see them complete a 100m event for the first time, giving them the confidence that they can do it. Incredible job by Emilie, Rohan, Esme, Olivia, Tiam, Freya, Chelsea, Holly, Hannah and Ryan! Some of the swimmers have just started feeling comfortable in butterfly and breaststroke, so to go through a race with all four strokes is a big achievement! The Swim Academy swimmers also raced the four 25m events where they continue to get more comfortable applying the technique and skills from practice into their race environments. A special congratulations to Ryan who competed in his first time trial with the team!

The swimmers Monsoon group did a great job performing a lot of the skills that we have been working on in practice including starts, turns and streamlines. It was amazing to see both Lily and Frank achieve their LMR time standards in the 200 IM showing that they have done a great job improving all four of their competitive strokes. All of the Monsoon group swimmers, Zoe, Evan, Vincent, Cameron, Nika and Pippa did an excellent job not only in how they swam, but also how they supported their teammates.

The swimmers in Tsunami, Typhoon and Pursuit raced throughout the week leading into the time trial to simulate the feeling of a multiple day competition. We had great results each day with everyone racing at or under their best times in the 100m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle events! We are working on the importance of feeling race speed in warm-ups and they are really starting to improve their focus to properly set up their races.

It was so fun to see everyone go after the 200m Individual Medley to start the time trial. A lot of big swims with Saige, Garrick, Tristan, Stella, Emma, Phillipa, Ally, Lucas, Marcus and Mia racing well under their previous best times. In the four 50m events there were so many fast swims, swimmers really buying into getting off the blocks fast and keeping their speed up into the walls. We will switch our focus to time standards over the next month, but we had a few swimmers get a head start on qualifying for SwimBC meets in new events. Congratulations to Josh to qualified his 100m Butterfly for SwimBC Provincial Championships! New SwimBC Divisional Championships time standards were set by Henry in the 100m Freestyle, Marcus in the 50m Backstroke and Stella in both the 50m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley! Tristan continued to set new team records with best times in six events through the week!

These performances all came after a buildup in our training. We are now going to switch more focus onto race speed and setting up the fastest racing of the season through June and July. This meet was a starting point for this next racing cycle so we should have a lot of incredible results to look forward to as we race through the end of the season. Everyone is moving into 12 months of training since we got back in the water and this is the best time to make the most of it.

All of our race results can be found on our team website and in the ondeck parent app. Our next Hurricanes Time Trial will be Sunday, June 13 from 4-7pm.
