Swim Team Starts Tuesday, June 1st!

Welcome to our ever changing for the better 2021 Swim Season!  It will be so great to have a close to “normal” season this summer!  While the Governor has lifted all COVID rules as of today, (Friday, May 26th) the swim league voted to keep our schedule as it was with hosting a Divisional Meet on Sunday, August 7.

Practice begins Tuesday, June 1stWhile public schools are still in session, practices will be in the afternoon.

                6 & under:  4:30-5:00 p.m.

                7-10 year olds: 5:00-5:45 p.m.

                11 & older:  5:45-6:30 p.m.

Please bring the following to practice next week:  goggles, swim cap, water bottle and towel.  You will need to also have fins—but Coach Manon will let you know when those are needed.

For next week, practice will be Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Thursday we will have Swim Suit sales and Swim Team old apparel exchange.  Come at the time your swimmer practices.  If you have multiple children, you can choose any of their swim practice times.  If you have practice suits/fins/garb that is no longer a good fit for your family, you may bring it to give away to a new family.  We will have tables out for the exchange.  Team suits are $59 for girls suits and $40 for boys.  Swim Caps are $12.  We can accept checks or cash.  While public school is in session, there are no practices on Fridays.

On Wednesday, June 9th, we will have Team Photos and Potluck.  All families should bring something to share (or if you are uncomfortable sharing, please bring a family picnic.)  A sign up will be going out for this.  If you have a family tent, bring it to help shade.  While we won’t have practice/pool time this day, we encourage our families to get to know each and will have outdoor fun on the volleyball and green areas.   We will also announce our Big Fish/Little Fish that day!  Big Fish will be there to mentor Little Fish during meets, helping them get a handle on things.

Morning practice begins on Monday, June 21st.   7-10 year olds and 11 & older will switch each week between the 1st practice time and the 3rd practice time (7:15-8:00 a.m. or 8:30-9:15 a.m.)  The 6 & under will always be the same time.  8:00-8:30 a.m.

As we head into our season, a key to a successful season is active parents!  We have volunteer positions for each meet.   Many thanks to our parents who have stepped up in lead positions:

  • Referee:  Rebecca Monnikendam
  • Starters:  John Griner and Matt Lavin (alternate)
  • Head Timer:  Squires Nolan
  • Concessions:  Michele Bright
  • Happy Hut Announcer:  Meghan Lambert

We have few key positions that we are looking to fill:

Meet Data Entry.  We are looking for two people who will work to input the times for each swimmer.  Needs to have great attention to detail and able type numbers.   For our home meets, this position is in our clubhouse (air conditioning a plus!) and you are able to see the events from the window or leave to watch your swimmer(s) as needed.  You don’t need any swim experience to help with this!

Stroke and Turn officials.  These folks are on the sidelines of the pool and have the best view of the meet—front and center!  And it’s a great way to learn what important those tiny swim corrections are!  There is online training or in-person training that is mandatory for this position.  We are asking for 8-10 individuals so each will only work half a meet and we have enough in case of vacations.  In person or online training is required.  Online training can be done at  There are two in person trainings:

Thursday, June 3rd at Norfolk Yacht Club (Ref and Starter is 6-7 p.m.; Stroke and Turn is 7-9 p.m.)

Monday, June 7th at Great Bridge Swim (Ref and Starter is 6-7 p.m.; Stroke and Turn is 7-9 p.m.)

Meet Set Up Lead.  The Donato’s are moving!  Jude has been a great lead in gathering the crew to set up the logistics for the meet.  He leaves us with a great map and instructions.  We set up after the pool closes on Friday night inside the pool deck area and finish early on Saturday a.m.  The crew has been known to kick back and have some “bonding time” after Friday night’s set up.

Please shoot me an email or text if you are willing to step up for one of these positions!  And, don’t worry, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities during the meet!  We will post those for each meet as we get closer to our first meet—we are just confirming what will be required for our first meet (Virtual) on June 19th.  You will be able to sign up for those volunteer positions on our website

Each week I will send out an update on Sunday’s reconfirming the schedule for the week, additional volunteer needs, reminders, etc.  They usually are much shorter than this one!

Thank you for joining Cheshire’s Swim Team—we are looking forward to a great season!  As always, if you have a questions or concern, feel free to give me a call, shoot me an email or text!  And I will be at most practices for the first couple of weeks so I get to see old friends and make some new ones!

Talk with you soon!
