Swim Team - First Day of Practice Tomorrow (also Assessments and the Parent Meet

Welcome to Summer Swim 2021!


After last summer - which didn’t feel quite right - we are all eager to have a full and fun swim season this year!  Please take a few minutes to read this email to prepare for our first practice tomorrow.


We practice by age group and this is our schedule through the end of the FCPS school year (June 11th)

Afternoon Practice Schedule

Location: Upper Pool

4:15pm – 5:15pm – 13 + olders

5:15pm – 6:15pm – 9-12 year olds

6:15 – 7pm – 8 + unders

Note: Tropical Storms begin 6/14


If your swimmer has to miss a practice (or two or three) over the next few weeks, we understand.  Just attend when you can.


Weather Notes and Cancellations

  • When there is heavy rain (obscuring visibility to the bottom of the pool), we cancel practice
  • When there is a high likelihood of thunder, we cancel practice
  • If the air and water temperatures are too low, we cancel practice


Decisions about weather cancellations are one of the hardest parts of a Team Rep’s job.  We will notify parents and swimmers via email ASAP, so you can plan accordingly. 


Assessment Day

Every swimmer age 8 and younger should participate in a swimming assessment.  Coaches will observe their skills and determine if they should practice with the Tropical Storms (our youngest group that teaches swimming fundamentals) or with the regular 8+under swimmers (where the emphasis will be on endurance and learning the 4 strokes).

Parent Meeting

There will be a meeting for all new and “experienced” swim parents at 6:00pm on June 1st on the Middle Deck. (If you are dropping your kiddo off for an assessment, just come a little late, not a big deal).  We’ll be explaining more about practices, meets, activities, and volunteering…. Speaking of….



Every parent is expected to help out in some way.  Whether you help at the Hurricane Café (our snack bar during meets) or participate as a lane timer or just move chairs as part of the set-up team – we need you!  The NVSL has reinstated their rule of three timers per lane, so we have added a lot more timer slots to our volunteer sign-up list.  You can sign up for EVERY MEET by viewing this SignUp Genius: HRARA: Hurricanes Volunteer Roster (signupgenius.com)

Reminder: If you are a deck official in need of recertification (that would be just about everyone this year), please:

  • Sign up to attend an online class (see attached schedule)
  • Attend your online class
  • Open the SignUp Genius and enter your name as a volunteer
  • Report back to your Team Reps to let them know.


This is an intense 8-weeks, but we all enjoy it so much!
