Our Hollyburn Summer Swim Meet was a great accomplishment for the team! If felt so great to have other teams on deck and other swimmers to race after the past 16 months of racing our own team. The meet was a really good way to finish the competition part of our swim season as we will now end the year getting back to basics and enjoying the last few practices with teammates.
The best part about racing other teams is always relays and our team did such a good job of stepping up and racing their best every time they were racing with teammates. Ideally swimmers should always break through to best times on relays before they do it in individual events because of the takeover and the excitement of racing with your friends. Our younger swimmers did a great job gaining experience racing relays at the meet. Our older swimmers really stepped up and we had some impressive best times that led to first place finishes in both relay events as well as moving up in the standings for our other teams! Tristan, Natalie, Jessie and Josh teamed up for our first place finishes with some big bests including Josh’s first time under 24 seconds in 50m Freestyle and Natalie’s great swims in 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly!
A few team highlights…
Anya raced to her best time in the 50m Breaststroke with great
strokerate throughout her race! Henry had so much speed to get out
in his 100m Freestyle and went 55 seconds for the first time!
Cameron knocked off an incredible 8 seconds from his 200m
Individual Medley, really figuring out his racing speed in back and
free. Rohan had a really strong 50m Freestyle! Josh proved that
some focused training really makes a big difference with impressive
best times in his 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke! Saige made a
big 14 second improvement in her 200m Breaststroke and finished the
meet with a big best time in her 100m Freestyle thanks to an
aggressive start! Vincent was so strong in both of his Freestyle
events, with longer strokes helping him to carry more speed! Nika
was impressive every time she raced improving by 11 seconds in her
200m Individual Medley and breaking two minutes in the 100m
Freestyle for the first time! Tiam raced his first 50m Backstroke
and held his speed really well! Ashton had a big drop in his 200m
Backstroke, with great racing on his breakout strokes to start each
length! Tristan pushed through his races despite not feeling 100%
and improved his times in both the 200m Freestyle and 400m
Freestyle! Harris reached much more in his strokes to take off a
lot of time in his 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle!
Nicole had a really great 200m Individual Medley, improving the
little things we talked about after she raced the same event on
Thursday afternoon! Ally had really good speed early in her 100m
and 200m Freestyle events! Holly did a fantastic job racing 50m
Backstroke for the first time and improved her 50m Freestyle time!
Pippa had a really strong 100m Freestyle and continues to have such
a great attitude at meets that officials from other clubs mention
how wonderful she is! Bianca swam a really good 100m Freestyle for
the first time and had a big improvement in the 50m Breaststroke!
Jessie went out super fast in her 200m Breaststroke and held on to
improve her team record in the event! Rafael keeps figuring out how
to race the 200m Breaststroke and took off a lot of time breaking
2:40 for the first time! Ashley swam the 200m Individual Medley for
the first time and showed so really long and strong breaststroke
strokes in the event! Natalie qualified for LMR Meets after
breaking four minutes in the 200m Individual Medley and really
moved fast in her 50m Freestyle! Lucas had his sprinting figured
out with fast strokes right off the block leading to bests in his
50m events! Natalie was so strong throughout her 100m Butterfly
racing to her best time in years! Evan’s freestyle events
were really great as he kept his strokerate up and really fought to
finish each race! Marcus finished the meet with an incredible 100m
Freestyle where he went out the same time as he raced the 50m
Freestyle and then used that speed to make a huge drop, exactly
what we want everyone doing in their 100m races! Mia had a really
strong 100m Breaststroke, she’s been taking less strokes in
practice and those long strokes paid off as she broke two minutes
for the first time!
The development of our Typhoon Group this year has been really encouraging. At the age of 12-14 it’s not always easy to put together full swim meets where you are on for every event and the most important thing is that you continue to learn from every time off the blocks. This weekend Brooke really had an incredible swim meet and it wasn’t just that she raced to all best times but how she raced to those times that was so impressive. She started the meet with the 200m Backstroke, we talked before her race about getting as much off of each of her walls as possible to start each length since she is very reliable finishing her lengths strong. Brooke had great breakouts throughout her swim and split her race so well. In 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly Brooke again powered through the breakout from her dive and got her speed up by kicking hard while she held the water through her entire stroke to make big improvements in each event. Her last event was the 100m Butterfly which has been a strong event all year, Brooke put together her best race! Brooke went out within a second of her best time at the 50m mark, then pushed through with her legs and increased her strokerate on the second half for a huge three second drop!
Thanks to all of the parents who helped volunteer at the meet! Jon has been helping us run all of our events throughout the season and continues to make these meets run smoothly. We also had Kim and Susan help with Stroke and Turn, next year we will be aiming to get more parents certified for these positions! A few parents helped as timers and even a few newer parents so that is very helpful! A big thanks to Coach Khosro who does so much work to keep all of our events running at a high level.
This was our last event for the year, we really made the most of the season! Enjoy time with friends and family over the summer. Really looking forward to a great 2021-2022 season in September!
