More Records, More Qualifying Times at Junior Olympics

Ukiah Dolphins Maggie Selzer, Roe Klein and Marcus Ramirez each beat at least one Long Course Team Record at the Junior Olympic Meet in Moraga .  Maggie was the first to swim.  She swam the ‘Mile’ or 1500 meters of freestyle.  She qualified for the meet in the short course 1650 yard equivalent so this was her first experience in this race.  She swam an excellent race and finished in a time of 21:53.80, which is the Ukiah Dolphin team record.  Roe Klein swam the 50 and 100 backstroke races.  He also qualified for the 200 meter race a week earlier, but it was too late to enter that race.  He swam the 50 on Friday in a time of 37.24, which was a half second improvement.  He came back on Sunday to do the 100 in 1:19.28, which is the new team record and a new Far Western qualifying time.  Both Maggie and Roe recently qualified for JO’s for the first time.  Several other swimmers have moved up to this level and the Dolphins expect the number of participants at this meet will be far greater next year.

Marcus Ramirez also attended the meet.  He chose to swim only two days, though he is qualified in all events.  He placed 4th in the 400 free in 4:33.71, the 800 free in 9:36.24 and the 100 fly in 1:01.80 all of which are team records.  He placed 5th in the 50 free in 26.52 and 6th in the 200 back in 2:32.52.  He was hoping to get his total of cut off times for the Western Zone All-Star team up to 5, which he exceeded.  He has since learned that he will be a part of the Pacific Swimming team to compete against all-star teams from Southern California, Oregon , Wyoming , Arizona Colorado and nine other regions.
