Pirates Receive Multiple Awards

The Marin Pirates recently received awards from three sources.

1.  USA Swimming Master Coach/Consultant Bob Steele ran a nationwide contest between all USA Swimming teams to see who had the best team cheer.  The Marin Pirates won first place with their famous "Five Lines Muscle Cheer" which was captured on videotape at the Lost Dutchman Championship in Arizona last February.  The Pirates were awarded a $300 first prize award, which was donated to the Swim-A-Thon effort.

2.  Marin County's State Senator Mark Leno issued certificates of recognition from the California State Senate to Sabrina Cochrane, Liliana Alvarez, Laura Slater, Kathryn Murphy and Ashley Williams to honor their achievements for the 2009-2010 swimming season.  These Pirate girls broke National records in both the 200 yard Freestyle and 200 yard Medley relays for the 17-18 age group.

3.  Three Marin Pirates won $500 scholarships from Pacific Swimming Zone 3.  Kathryn Murphy won the Peter Ruona memorial award and Shintaro Noguchi and Sabrina Cochrane won the Wally Frank memorial awards.  The awards were given based on athletic achievement, academic standing, community service and an essay on what swimming means to them.  Each year four of these awards are given.  In the last five years, Marin Pirates have won sixteen of the twenty scholarships.
