Olympic Medalist/World-Record Holder Visits NVST

Swimmers and families from the Napa Valley Swim Team were honored when Olympic medalist and world-record holder Margaret Hoelzer attended the team’s practice and demonstrated her record-setting techniques. After the demonstration, Hoelzer answered questions and signed autographs. Hoelzer is from Huntsville, Ala. and swam for Auburn University. She competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and won two silver medals and one bronze. “The most memorable swimming event for me was in 2007 when I broke the world record in the 200-meter backstroke, dropping 21⁄2 seconds,” Hoelzer told the NVST swimmers, who ranged in age from 6 to 17. She said that through much sacrifice, she gained more than she missed out on during her 20 years of swimming, making a lot of friends and memories while traveling the globe. “No matter what you do,” she said, “there is a give and take in life, and you need to make sure that whatever you are putting into your sport, make sure you are getting something out of it.”
