DeKalb senior Grace Waller signed a national letter of intent earlier this week to swim for Oakland (Mich.) University next fall.

"I've been in touch with the coaches over the past couple of weeks," Waller said. "I really like their philosophy on swimming. I went on a recruiting trip there a few weeks ago and fell in love with the campus. It's gorgeous."

Waller, who overcame surgery to remove a malignant tumor in her right leg and subsequent chemotherapy treatments that cost her most of her junior season, made it back to the state meet for the third time in her career. Waller has qualified in two events for this weekend at state – the 200 and 500-yard freestyle.

Next year, she'll join an Oakland team that has won 11 straight Summit League championships.

"They don't lose," Waller said. "It'll be an awesome team to be a part of. I'm pretty excited about that."

Waller said she wants to major in sports management and become a sports agent.
