May 31, 2011
The 2011 May Flowers meet was once again a tremendous success. It had one of the largest turnouts in meet history as teams from all over the Northwest made an appearance in this two day meet. BCST was represented by 67 Orange capped senior athletes.
At a meet this early in the season you’re really looking for two things, effort and execution. The effort was definitely there, but the execution was schizophrenic at best. We hadn’t swum in a Long Course race since last summer, and it showed. None the less, a meet like this is practice for our championships, and the early season swims that seem like miscues are really just the beginnings of re-learning our much needed Long Course skills. Swimmers will see that with the more we race Long Course, the quicker we’ll acclimate and achieve greater successes.
Now I may have painted a semi-bleak description of the swimmers' performances, but there were some terrific efforts by the team. Congratulations to these swimmers who achieved 100% lifetime best swims: Jake Beauchamp, Aaron Elhajj, Gabe Florsheim, Tsukasa ito, Conrad Karwal, Peter Litzow, Christina McDermott, Naomi Ngo, Nick Swaya, PJ Warmenhaven, and Emma Wrightson.
The success of May Flowers was also thanks in large part to the BCST boosters for putting on another stellar show. Notably, Jill O’Keefe led the troops of parent volunteers as the Meet Director, Mike Howard was in charge of disqualifying swimmers as Meet Referee, and Michelle Lemke patiently let me fix my entry errors as Entry Chairperson. Thank you very much one and all!
