Napa Valley Swim Team competes in Arizona meet

Several members of the Napa Valley Swim Team recently traveled to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Tucson Ford Dealers Invitational at the University of Arizona.

The field featured a number of national- and world-class swimmers, including an All-Star team from British Columbia and former U.S. Olympians Ed Moses and Christine Magnusson of host team Tucson Ford Aquatics.

The travel trip was a fun, inspirational, and educational exposure to the world of elite competitive swimming.

The NVST swimmers who competed in the meet were Louis Ayers, Hayden Corley, Mia Facey, Ximena Mendieta, Megan Minor, Omar Saldivar, Sam Starr and Alex Swanson. The meet was conducted in the international-standard, 50-meter course, and was held in a preliminary and finals format.

Swimmers who reached the finals (top 16) were Louis Ayers (16th, 200 butterfly, 2:28.49; 27th, 100 butterfly, 1:08.46), Hayden Corley (10th, 100 breaststroke, 1:11.61; 7th, 200 breaststroke, 2:36.74; 19th, 200 individual medley, 2:27.26), Mia Facey (16th, 100 freestyle, 1:02.13; 11th, 200 butterfly, 2:32.34; 20th, 50 freestyle, 28.65; 15th, 400 individual medley, 5:37.23; 8th, 100 butterfly, 1:06.55; 15th, 200 individual medley), Ximena Mendieta (23rd, 100 butterfly, 1:11.93), Megan Minor (20th, 100 backstroke, 1:11.61), Omar Saldivar (14th, 200 butterfly, 2:26.61; 16th, 100 butterfly, 1:02.24; 22nd, 200 individual medley, 2:32.71), Sam Starr (21st, 100 freestyle, 56.73; 15th, 200 backstroke, 2:26.71; 20th, 200 freestyle, 2:06.77; 13th, 50 freestyle, 25.77; 7th, 100 backstroke, 1:04.24; 11th, 200 individual medley, 2:20.87), and Alexandria Swanson (6th, 100 breaststroke, 1:19.00).

The NVST relay teams also placed well.

On the women’s side, Facey, Minor, Swanson and Mendieta placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:18.99) and Minor, Swanson, Facey, Mendieta took third in the 400 medley relay (4:47.88. On the men’s side, Corley, Saldivar, Ayers and Starr placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:02.71) and Starr, Corley, Saldivar, Ayers were third in the 400 medley relay (4:27.45).

Napa Valley placed ninth out of 25 teams in the combined team scoring.
