Aimee Kappler

Head Diving Coach

Email

I hope everyone is ready for a new season of Fenton Sharks Diving.  My name is Aimee Kappler, and I am excited to be the new dive coach, as well as the parent rep, for the Dive team this year.  My son Nate has been diving for three years now and I’ve come to love the sport.   I am a physical therapist with Special School District of St. Louis County, working in both Rockwood and Parkway School District schools, and have the pleasure of taking my summers off.    I am confident that with my experience  working with children, my prior coaching experience, and my involvement as a parent of a diver, that I can bring structure, fun, learning new skills, and  communication to the diving summer program.

I want to be clear that I have never been a diver myself.  I was an All-American gymnast at Southeast Missouri State University and a member of the Division II National Championship team in 1991.  I have coached gymnastics at several different levels at various points in my adulthood, but have never coached diving.  I was frustrated with last year’s summer diving program at Fenton, but knew that with some more parent and adult guidance the program could be greatly improved.   I understood that Fenton had a difficult position to fill in trying to hire a coach who not only has diving experience, but also experience working with children and the time during the summer to make the commitment.   Some teens may struggle taking on such a position requiring initiative and little guidance.  My experience with the summer league for the last few years will help me implement changes and communicate with families more clearly regarding dive team concerns, questions, and expectations as the swimming side does not have this experience.  As a pediatric physical therapist for children with motor impairments, I have a unique understanding of how to break down a skill and how to communicate/teach children.   I have a basic understanding of diving technique and have observed several drills for beginning divers.   I expect the children to have fun and improve their diving skills in the few weeks that the session runs.  I hope we can build a love of the support from kids and parents alike.   I will be following up with information on my expectations for this year and more detail on the work assignments as I know this was a source of angst for me our first year.
