Former Indiana Swimming General Chair Joanne Hartzer Passes Away


Joanne (Fox) Hartzer was born May 4, 1936 and passed on January 4, 2014 after a long battle with COPD.  She was President of the Riviera Swim Club Board and Indiana Swimming in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, taking over from her husband, James R. Hartzer after his early passing.  Her active support of swimming as a swim mom and part of Indiana Swimming, lasted over 24 years and continued as a key passion for her until her death.  She helped shepherd in the inaugural use of the IUPUI Natatorium for the Pam Am Games, several Olympic Trials as partners with Indiana Sports Corporation, and in multiple Indiana Swimming Events.  In 1996, she was able to travel with her son J. Chris to the Olympics in Atlanta to watching the swimming competitions.

In lieu of flowers, in her memory the family asks that they make a donation on her behalf to Indiana Swimming  at 201 South Capitol Ave, Suite 410, Indianapolis, IN 46225 (attention Lynn Kinstler) in support of the renovations at the IU Natatorium (IUPUI campus).

Funeral Arrangements, a calling will be held Wednesday January 7th from 5-8pm at Leppert Mortuary in Nora, 740 E. 86th Street Indianapolis, IN 46240.  The funeral will be held January 8th at 10:00am at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
