EVEGREEN SWIM CLUBS HOSTS NEIL WALKER SWIM CLINIC ON APRIL 18TH FROM 7:30am TO 10:30am.
Neil Walker, born and raised in Verona, WI. quickly became an outstanding age group and high school swimmer under ESC's Head Coach, Randy Trowbridge. While swimming for Verona Aquatics and Coach Randy, Walker set state records and a Junior National record along with finaling in the 100 back at Senior Nationals. Recruited by several schools, including Florida, USC, Auburn and Arizona, he decided to make his mark under head coach Eddie Reese at Texas.
In 1994, Walker came to University of Texas and for the next fourteen years was a huge influence on Longhorn teams as both a swimmer and a coach. Under Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik, Walker earned 25 All-American awards, back to back NCAA individual titles and six Big 12 conference titles. He was also a member of the 1996 NCAA championship team. He set an NCAA record in the 50 year freestyle(19.08) and swam the 100 yard back in 44.92 seconds, setting an American, U. S. Open and NCAA record. His accomplishments (shortened by a broken hand the second day of the meet) earned him the NCAA Swimmer of the Year award in 1997.
While competing for Team USA for 10 years(1997-2007), including the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, Walker earned 17 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and one bronze medal. In 1998, Walker was ranked top 6 in the world in the 100 free, 100 back, and 100 fly. He was elected USA National Team captain in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Neil finished his collegiate career as one of the most decorated athletes in Texas history and as one of the highest ranked Longhorn swimmers in the school's history. Considered one of the most versatile swimmers in American swimming history, Neil has held records in every stroke (breaststroke through an I.M. record) and over multiple distances.
Walker retired from swimming competitively after the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and started a swim school with Olympian and former Longhorn teammate Ian Crocker and U.S. National Champion and former Longhorn teammate James Fike, with locations in Austin and Dallas. Walker works now as the Aquatic Director of the Rockwall Swim School and Head Coach of the Rockwall Aquatic Center of Excellence (RACE), located in Rockwall, Texas.
Cost is $25.00 per swimmer. This clinic is for all Senior and Blue group swimmers. Red group swimmers may attend if they have met gold time standards for their age group. All parents, coaches, and ESC swimmers are welcome to observe the clinic from the stands.
