NVST Competes At Short Course JO Meet

Thirteen members of the Napa Valley Swim Team competed in Pacific Swimming’s Short Course Junior Olympics March 20-22 at the Concord Community Pool, which had more than 600 swimmers from 50 teams and was one of two venues hosting the large competition.

Swimmers must have qualifying times to participate in the meet. It began with preliminary heats in the morning that sent the top 16 finishers to the afternoon portion, where the top eight competed in the championship finals and the ninth through 16th finishers competed in the consolation championship finals.

Swimming in their first Junior Olympics were Rachel Arndt and Rachel Galvin. Both girls competed in the girls 9-10 age division. Galvin achieved 100-percent best times, which included a sixth-place finish in the championship finals of the 100-yard butterfly, a third-place finish in the consolation finals of the 200 freestyle and an eighth-place finish in the consolation finals of the 50 free. Rachel Arndt achieved a best time in the 50 free and the 50 fly.

In the boys 9-10 division, Matthew Larsen swam to a seventh-place finish in the championship finals of the 50 breaststroke, an eighth-place finish in the championship finals of the 500 yard freestyle, a second-place finish in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke, and a third-place finish in the consolation finals of the 200 individual medley, where he also achieved a best time.

In the boys 11-12 division, Iona Pascual not only achieved four best times but also set four new NVST records and finished first in the championship finals in five of his seven events. In the 100 free, he swam to a third-place finish in the championship finals, where his time of 52.26 broke a 21-year-old record. In the 100 breaststroke, Pascual swam to a victory in the championship finals where his time of 1:04.70 broke a 17-year-old team record. In the 400 IM and 200 IM, Pascual swam to victories in the championship finals, where his times of 4:30.83 and 2:06.62 broke his own team records. In addition, Pascual swam to first-place finishes in the championship finals in the 100 IM and 50 breaststroke, and second-place finishes in the championship finals in the 50 free.

Also in the 11-12 boys division, Will Flanders swam to a second-place finish in the consolation finals of the 200 breaststroke and a seventh-place finish in the consolation finals of the 50 backstroke, which was also a best time. Max Gilsenan swam to a third-place finish in the consolation finals of the 50 breaststroke, which was also a new AA time, and he also swam to a fourth-place finish in the consolation finals of the 100 breaststroke. Michael Izzi achieved a best time in the 200 free. Barrett McMichael achieved 100-percent best times, including a sixth-place finish in the championship finals of the 500 free and victories in the consolation finals of the 100 fly (also a new Far Western Time) and the 100 free.

In the girls 13-14 division, Emily Dusky achieved five best times and in the championship finals she swam to a victory in the 100 breaststroke, which was also a new AAAA time; fourth-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM; a fifth-place finish in the 400 yard IM; and a seventh-place finish in the 200 free. Dusky also swam to a fifth-place finish in the consolation finals of the 50 free.

In the boys 13-14 division, Michael Noonan achieved a best time while finishing fourth in the consolation finals of the 200 fly, and also placed seventh in the 400 IM. Eric Tapia achieved best times in the 100 fly and 200 fly. Gabe Wright swam to a fifth-place finish in the championship finals of the 200 fly, which was also a new AA time, and he swam to fourths in the consolation finals of the 400 IM and 100 fly.

In the girls 15-16 division, Kelsie Wright swam to second-place finishes in the 200 free and 500 free, a third-place finish in the 100 free, a fourth-place finish in the 200 back and a 10th-place finish in the 100 fly.
