Report- Kamloops Classic June 5-7, 2015

Head Coach Malwina Bukszowana and Coach Kathryn Zrum

17 swimmers from WGB flew to Kamloops last weekend. The hot weather did not distract our athletes, it all looked like they have recharged theirs batteries and swam best times.

Great form showed the youngest from WGB Kassua Dreyer, who is coached by Corey Bradbury. Kassua won silver medal in 200 Free in under 10 age category. She also came 4th in 100 Breast, 5th in 100 Free, 6th in 50 Breast, 7th in 200 IM.

Cassis Lindsay in her age group (13-14) qualified to 8 A finals. She won 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free with her new National AG qualifying time and is now eligible to represent the club in Quebec. Cassis also won 200 Free. She added bronze medal in 100 Back and 4th place in 200 Back, 4th in 50 Back and 5th place in 50 Fly.

Rennes 400 IM, 200 IM and 200 Free were new National AG qualifying times and together with her older sister, she is going to represent WGB and Yukon at National Age Group Championships in Quebec this summer.

The only B final Thomas had in 100 Back. It is his the weakest stroke so far, but he is working hard to correct his mistakes and improve it. He needs it for his favourite 200 IM event.

Aidan Harvey was presenting very good performance making four A finals, finishing 3rd in 100 Back, 7th in 200 IM and 100 Free, and 6th in 200 Free. He also swam 50 Free in B final.

Brooklyn Massie (11- 12) had a very good meet improving her best times in every event. Brook qualified to A final five times in: 200 IM (8th), 50 Back (5th), 100 Free (7th), 200 Back (8th), 100 Back (5th). Two other events Brooklyn swam in B finals: 50 Fly, 200 Free.

Ella Pollock- Shepherd (11- 12), who is only second year in our swim club, is not wasting her time. Ella listens to every coaching advice and she goes out hard in every race. She was 7th in A final in 200 Breast. Our tough girl qualified to three B finals: 100 Breast, 50 Back, and 100 Fly. She likes to push herself into the limits and as Ella says with a big smile: “I feel very good after that”.

Kathy Zrum was pleased seeing good performance of her both girls, Emma and Ella.

Luke Bakica (14) won B final in 200 IM. He also swam B finals in: 50 Free, 100 Free, and 200 Free.

Meghan Pennington who is 11, swam five times in B finals: 50 Back, 50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Back and 50 Breast.

It was great to see so many WGB swimmers in the finals. Almost in every final and in every stroke we had somebody racing. It was easy to notice our swimmers going hard and staying strong under the water off the walls. Each start we were ahead or even with other athletes within the heat, but we were the ones staying the longest under the water, which means that Glacier Bears are learning a very important skill for this sport and we are slowly mastering it. At this age it is a good habit to have, from now, it can only get better if they will continue thinking about it during practice.
